Chapter 5 - THE UNRAVELINGWithin a week, the Sterling name went from being synonymous with untouchable wealth to becoming the biggest cautionary tale in the nation's financial history.

The media frenzy was unprecedented. Tabloids splashed headlines across every newsstand: THE FALL OF THE STERLING EMPIRE: HOW A QUIET WIFE DESTROYED A BILLION-DOLLAR DYNASTY IN 72 HOURS. Paparazzi camped outside the grand estate, waiting to capture the moment Victoria and Brooke were forced to pack their designer clothes into cheap cardboard boxes.

Because I had foreclosed on the estate under my personal holding company, I gave them exactly forty-eight hours to vacate.

I stood on the second-floor balcony of the mansion, watching from behind dark sunglasses as the moving trucks loaded up Brooke’s endless collection of luxury goods. Brooke was screaming at a moving coordinator, her face red with fury, while Victoria sat on a stone bench, staring blankly at the ground, utterly broken by the loss of her social status.

A soft knock sounded at the double doors behind me. Marcus stepped out onto the balcony, holding a fresh cup of espresso and a thick manila folder.

"The emergency custody hearing concluded twenty minutes ago," Marcus said, a faint smile playing on his lips. "The judge granted you sole legal and physical custody of Leo, with zero visitation rights for Richard until he completes court-mandated psychiatric evaluations and anger management classes. As for the financial settlement, all remaining accounts have been successfully transferred to your private trust."

I took the espresso from his hand, inhaling the rich aroma. "And Richard?"

"He's currently facing three distinct counts of corporate fraud and perjury," Marcus replied casually. "His defense attorneys dropped him this morning because he couldn't pay their retainer. He's completely isolated."

Just then, down in the courtyard, Richard spotted me standing on the balcony. Ignoring the security guards, he broke into a frantic run toward the grand staircase, screaming my name at the top of his lungs.

"Elena! ELENA!"

He burst through the balcony doors, looking disheveled, wild-eyed, and desperate. He fell to his knees right in front of me, grabbing the hem of my trousers.

"Please, Elena! I'm begging you!" he sobbed, tears streaming down his face. "I was a fool! I listened to my mother, I listened to Brooke, I lost my mind! But we're a family! You can't just throw me away like trash!"

I looked down at the man who had watched his own son being called an embarrassment, the man who had conspired to strip me of my dignity, now begging for scraps at my feet.

I didn't feel anger. I didn't feel pity. I felt absolute, liberating nothingness.
