Chapter 2 - THE MIDNIGHT RAID AND THE RAT TRAPThe sound of shattering mahogany echoed through the second-floor corridor as the tactical team blew the outer security doors off their hydraulic hinges. Heavy combat boots pounded up the curved marble staircase, shouting commands through bullhorns.

"Federal and State Police! Clear every room! Secure the perimeter!"
Inside the master suite, time seemed to slow down. David Sterling was pinned against the balcony glass, gasping for air as Viktor’s stiletto held him firmly in place. Jessica Cole backed away slowly, her hands raised in instinctive surrender, her designer heels clicking frantically against the floorboards as she tried to slip toward the private ensuite bathroom.
"Ah-ah, Jessica," Samuel Reed’s voice echoed from the hallway intercom as he unlocked the master door externally using his master override code. "Leaving so soon? We haven't even reviewed the preliminary draft of your corporate conspiracy charges."
The heavy oak doors swung inward. In marched half a dozen heavily armed state troopers, led by Captain Sarah Vance—Viktor’s younger sister and the lead investigator of the State Financial Crimes Task Force. Behind her walked Samuel Reed, impeccably dressed in a charcoal three-piece suit, holding a thick leather briefcase stamped with the official seal of the Sterling Global Trust.
Captain Sarah Vance swept her gaze across the room, taking in the glowing toxicology screen, the frozen monitor displaying Evelyn's eye-tracking metrics, and the terrified face of Jessica pressed against the bathroom door frame.
"David Sterling and Jessica Cole," Sarah announced, her voice ringing with absolute authority as she unholstered her cuffs. "You are under arrest for attempted premeditated murder, corporate identity fraud, financial embezzlement, and the illegal acquisition of restricted neurotoxins. You have the right to remain silent..."
"This is a mistake!" David screamed, his face still pressed against the cracked glass, spitting blood onto the frame. "My wife is mentally incapacitated! She suffers from severe delusions! This computer—this entire setup—is an illegal fabrication by a disgruntled ex-attorney and a corporate rival!"
Samuel Reed adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, a calm, chilling smile playing on his lips. He walked over to the bed, looked down at Evelyn, and gently placed a reassuring hand over her motionless wrist.
"Delusions, David?" Samuel turned to face the room, flipping open his leather briefcase. He pulled out a thick stack of certified documents and held them up. "Let’s talk about delusions. For the past six months, every single meal served to Mrs. Sterling was prepared exclusively by Chef Marco under your direct orders—chef Marco, who was arrested twenty minutes ago at a diner three miles away with twenty thousand dollars in cash bearing your thumbprints."
Jessica’s face turned chalk white. "Marco... that idiot..."
"And let's talk about the original will," Samuel continued, his voice rising, cutting through David's frantic denials. "The one you thought you successfully replaced with a forged document last Tuesday. The one that leaves 100 percent of the Sterling empire to a blind trust managed by Viktor Vance and myself, entirely cutting you out."
Samuel pulled out a pristine, blue-ribboned document and laid it directly across Evelyn’s chest, right over her unmoving heart.
"Evelyn signed this document five years ago," Samuel said, locking eyes with David. "And she reaffirmed it this morning using her eye-tracker. You never owned a single share of this company, David. You were just a hired manager waiting for an inheritance that was never yours to take."
Captain Sarah stepped forward, grabbed David by the shoulder, spun him around, and slammed the steel handcuffs onto his wrists with a sharp, metallic click. Another officer moved swiftly to apprehend Jessica, slapping cuffs onto her trembling wrists as she sobbed hysterically.
"Get them out of my sight," Sarah ordered the troopers.
As David was dragged past the bed, his eyes locked onto Evelyn’s face. Despite her total paralysis, Evelyn’s eyes burned with an icy, triumphant fury. She didn't blink. She watched him fall.
"You won't get away with this, Evelyn!" David screamed, his voice echoing down the corridor as he was hauled away. "I’ll see you both in hell!"
The heavy oak doors slammed shut behind them, leaving Viktor, Samuel, Sarah, and Evelyn alone in the quiet sanctuary of the bedroom.
Viktor walked over to the bed, knelt down beside Evelyn, and gently brushed a lock of silver-streaked hair from her forehead.
"They're gone, Evie," Viktor whispered softly. "The nightmare is over."
But Evelyn’s eye-tracking computer suddenly beeped. A new, flashing red warning message appeared on the screen, completely unprompted by any human hand.

Viktor frowned, looking up at Samuel. "What does that mean?"
Samuel’s face drained of color. "It means David wasn't working alone."
