Chapter 3 - THE CIPHER OF THE SHADOW BOARDThe silence that followed the warning beep felt heavier than the threat of the poison itself.

Viktor stood up slowly from his kneeling position beside the bed, his eyes fixed on the flashing red banner across the eye-tracking monitor. The text read: SERVER B COMPromiseD - DATA STREAM REDIRECTED TO OMEGA-7.
"Omega-7?" Captain Sarah stepped forward, her hand resting instinctively on her sidearm. "That's a ghost classification. It's an untraceable dark-web proxy network used by high-level corporate espionage syndicates. I thought it was just an urban legend."
"It's no legend," Samuel Reed said grimly, walking over to the computer console and tapping a series of manual override commands into the physical keyboard. "David was a corporate shark, yes, but he lacked the technical sophistication to build an automated data siphon of this magnitude. Someone else engineered this trap."
On the bed, Evelynâs eyes darted frantically across the screen, selecting a sequence of letters with blinding speed. The computer translated her gaze into a synthesized, robotic voice:
âThe... Shadow... Board.â
Viktor narrowed his eyes. "The Shadow Board? You mean the secret advisory council of Sterling Global? I thought that was just a myth David invented to scare the board of directors during my absence."
Evelyn blinked twiceâthe affirmative command.
âThey... never... left,â the computer spoke for her, the synthesized tone echoing through the tense room. âDavid... was... just... their... puppet. The... poison... was... their... design... to... force... a... hostile... takeover... of... the... entire... biomedical... division.â
Samuel's jaw tightened. "Biomedical division? Evelyn, are you telling me this isn't just about your money? It's about your research?"
Before Evelyn could blink her confirmation, the bedroom's smart-lighting system flickered violently from warm white to an aggressive, pulsing amber. Every computer, tablet, and smartphone in the room simultaneously chimed with an incoming notification.
Captain Sarah pulled out her department-issued encrypted phone. Her eyes widened as she read the incoming dispatch. "Guys... you need to see this. The state police headquarters just sent an emergency citywide alert."
She turned the phone around so Viktor and Samuel could see the screen. A live news broadcast was playing from the downtown financial district.
Smoke billowed from the upper floors of the Sterling Global headquarters tower. A massive digital billboard overlooking the central plazaâusually displaying luxury watch advertisementsâhad been hijacked. In bold, blood-red letters, a message flashed across the city:
STERLING GLOBAL IS NOW UNDER THE CONTROL OF THE SHADOW BOARD. ALL ASSETS FROZEN. LIQUIDATION COMMENCES AT MIDNIGHT.
Viktor let out a dark, dangerous laugh. "Well, well. It seems the rats didn't just crawl out of the woodworkâthey brought an army."
"We need to get Evelyn out of here immediately," Samuel insisted, his hands flying across his briefcase to secure the original documents. "If the Shadow Board realizes their local proxyâDavidâhas been arrested, they won't hesitate to eliminate any loose ends. This estate is no longer safe."
"She isn't going anywhere yet," Viktor replied, his voice dropping an octave into a tone of absolute, chilling resolve. He walked over to the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out at the rain-soaked gardens below where the police cruisers were beginning to pack up. "If we move her now, we play right into their hands. They want us running."
"And what do you suggest we do, Viktor? Sit here and wait for an airstrike?" Sarah challenged, crossing her arms.
Viktor turned around, a sharp, calculating glint in his grey eyes. "No. We turn the trap back on them. If the Shadow Board thinks David succeeded in incapacitating Evelyn permanently, they'll want to verify the kill themselves. They'll send an auditor."

He looked down at the glowing screen where Evelynâs eyes were locked onto him, full of a fierce, unyielding intelligence.
"Let's invite them to dinner," Viktor whispered.
