Chapter 4 - THE AUDITOR ARRIVES AT MIDNIGHTThe grandfather clock in the downstairs foyer struck midnight, its heavy, metallic chimes reverberating through the sprawling, storm-battered mansion.

Upstairs in the master suite, the atmosphere was thick with manufactured normalcy. The medical bed had been straightened, the broken balcony glass temporarily sealed with a heavy-duty tactical blast shield, and Evelyn lay perfectly still beneath her pristine white sheets, her eye-tracking computer calibrated to display a continuous, looping vital-sign monitor that simulated a comatose state.

Viktor stood hidden in the shadowed walk-in closet, the door cracked open by two inches, his hand resting on the grip of a suppressed tactical pistol. Samuel Reed sat at the mahogany desk in the corner, wearing David’s discarded suit jacket, reviewing false financial ledgers under the dim amber glow of a desk lamp. Captain Sarah and her strike team were positioned in the reinforced panic room down the hall, monitoring every square inch of the estate via hidden thermal cameras.

Ding-dong.

The front doorbell chimed softly through the intercom system. It wasn't the frantic, urgent ringing of police or emergency responders. It was a single, polite, perfectly measured chime.

Samuel swallowed hard, took a deep breath, and pressed the intercom button on the desk. "Who's there?" he asked, pitching his voice to sound weary and strained.

"Good evening, Mr. Reed," a crisp, refined British accent replied through the speaker, devoid of any warmth or emotion. "My name is Julian Vance—no relation to your late associate, I assure you. I am the senior portfolio manager representing the Sterling Global Advisory Council. I am here to conduct a routine post-mortem verification of Mrs. Sterling's estate."

Samuel exchanged a glance with the crack in the closet door. Viktor gave a subtle, silent nod.

"It's midnight, Mr. Vance," Samuel replied, forcing a cough. "The household is in mourning. Mr. Sterling is currently unavailable."

"Mr. Sterling's unavailability is precisely why I am here," Julian’s voice replied, smooth as silk and twice as sharp. "Open the front door, Mr. Reed. Or I shall be forced to conclude that the rumors of Mrs. Sterling's unexpected... lucidity... are entirely accurate."

Samuel stood up from the desk, walked over to the main control panel by the door, and pressed the master unlock switch.

Downstairs, the heavy oak front door clicked open.

Heavy, measured footsteps began to ascend the grand staircase. One, two, three steps at a time. Slow, confident, and utterly unafraid.

In the master bedroom, every eye was glued to the entrance. Evelyn’s gaze remained locked on the ceiling monitor, her pulse rate steady on the simulation graph.

The bedroom door pushed open.

Standing in the doorway was a tall, impeccably dressed man in a charcoal three-piece suit, silver-rimmed glasses catching the dim light. He held a leather attaché case in one hand and an expensive sterling-silver cane in the other. He didn't look like an assassin; he looked like a billionaire CEO stepping into a boardroom.

Julian stepped into the room, his sharp eyes scanning the space before landing on Samuel standing by the desk. He didn't even bother looking at Evelyn in the bed.

"A charming little stage play, Mr. Reed," Julian said, offering a thin, condescending smile as he walked further into the room. "You and Viktor Vance really thought you could outsmart the Shadow Board with a computer script and a handful of local cops?"

Julian reached into his attaché case, pulled out a gold-plated flash drive, and tossed it onto the desk.

"Plug that into the main terminal," Julian commanded softly. "Transfer the biomedical patents back to our offshore server, and perhaps—just perhaps—we'll let you walk out of this house alive."

Viktor’s voice suddenly echoed from the dark interior of the walk-in closet, cold and razor-sharp.

"I'm afraid your portfolio management skills are about to be put to the test, Julian. Because you're the one who isn't walking out."
