Chapter 6 - THE SIXTY-SECOND COUNTDOWNThe room erupted into controlled chaos.

"Samuel! Get on the secondary terminal!" Viktor barked, keeping his weapon trained squarely on Julian's chest while lunging forward to grab the edge of the desk. "Override the proxy relay before the countdown hits zero!"

Samuel didn't hesitate. He dove across the mahogany desk, knocking over a stack of legal briefs, and slammed his fingers onto the secondary override keyboard. A barrage of complex command lines flashed across the terminal in blinding green text.

ACCESS DENIED. ENCRYPTION PROTOCOL OMEGA ACTIVE.

"I can't get through!" Samuel shouted over the piercing alarm blaring from the computer speakers. "His remote trigger is routing the kill-code through three different satellite relays in Zurich, Singapore, and the Cayman Islands! We need a physical key to break the loop!"

Julian threw his head back and laughed maniacally, blood vessels bulging in his neck. "You're too late! You can't beat the board! Even if you kill me right now, the system purges itself automatically! Sterling Global dies with us!"

00:34... 00:33... 00:32...

The countdown numbers bled across every screen in the mansion. Downstairs, the emergency klaxons began to wail.

Viktor narrowed his eyes, his finger tightening slightly on the trigger. He didn't look at the countdown. He looked at Julian's left hand—specifically, the heavy gold signet ring stamped with the crest of the Shadow Board.

"You arrogant bastard," Viktor muttered. "You didn't route the kill-code through Zurich."

Julian’s laughter choked in his throat, his eyes widening in sudden panic. "What are you talking about?"

"You're a micro-manager, Julian," Viktor said coldly, taking a step closer. "You never trust an automated proxy when you can control it yourself. That ring isn't just jewelry. It's a biometric hardware token."

Before Julian could react, Viktor lunged forward, holstering his pistol in a fraction of a second, and delivered a devastating right hook to Julian’s jaw. The portfolio manager crashed hard against the mahogany bookshelf, sending thick leather-bound legal volumes cascading onto the floor.

Viktor leaped on top of him, pinned Julian’s left hand to the hardwood, and jammed his thumb directly onto the biometric scanner embedded in the face of the gold signet ring.

Julian thrashed wildly, screaming in rage. "Get off me! You're breaking the circuit!"

00:05... 00:04... 00:03...

Samuel slammed his palm onto the master terminal enter key just as Viktor successfully authenticated the ring's biometric signature against the server's master firewall.

00:01...

SYSTEM OVERRIDE SUCCESSFUL. DATA SECURED.

The piercing alarms instantly cut out. The flashing red warning banners on all screens turned a crisp, stable, emerald green.

Julian slumped back against the base of the bookshelf, completely defeated, gasping for air as a trickle of blood ran down his chin.

Samuel let out a long, shaky breath, wiping sweat from his forehead. "We... we got it. The entire archive of the Shadow Board is locked in our custody. Every offshore account, every shell company, every corrupt politician... it's all ours."

Viktor stood up slowly, adjusting his trench coat, and looked down at Julian with absolute contempt. He ripped the signet ring off Julian's finger and tossed it onto the desk.

On the bed, Evelyn's eye-tracking computer fired up one final time for the night. The cursor glided smoothly across the screen, selecting a pre-prepared legal indictment document addressed directly to the international criminal court.

“File... it... all,” the synthesized voice commanded smoothly.

Captain Sarah burst back into the room, flanked by four heavily armed tactical officers, her breath coming in heavy gasps. "We intercepted an encrypted transmission coming from the perimeter! A clean-up crew is heading up the driveway right now!"

Viktor smiled, a cold, lethal expression that didn't reach his eyes.

"Let them come," Viktor said, drawing his pistol back out and checking the magazine. "We've been waiting to clear house for a very long time."
