Chapter 8 - THE TRIAL OF THE CENTURYThe media circus outside the Federal District Courthouse in downtown was unlike anything the city had ever witnessed. Satellite trucks lined the streets for blocks, and camera crews pushed and shoved against the steel barricades, all desperate to catch a glimpse of the most scandalous corporate corruption trial in modern history.

Inside Courtroom 401, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.
The defense table was a ghost town of ruined reputations. David Sterling sat in a standard orange jumpsuit, his tailored black suit replaced by prison blues, staring blankly at the polished mahogany table with hollow, bloodshot eyes. Beside him, Jessica Cole sobbed quietly into her hands, her designer makeup completely ruined, refusing to look up at the flashing camera lights from the press gallery.
Across the aisle sat Julian and the surviving members of the Shadow Board, their expressions carved from stone as they awaited the judge's final verdict.
At the prosecution table sat Samuel Reed, flanked by Captain Sarah Vance and Viktor Vance.
And directly facing the judge's bench, positioned in a specialized high-tech medical transport gurney, was Evelyn Sterling.
Though her body remained motionless beneath a pristine ivory cashmere blanket, her eye-tracking computer was mounted directly before her face, linked to the courtroom's main projection screens.
The heavy oak doors at the back of the courtroom swung open, and Judge Harrison stepped up to the bench, his face stern and unyielding.
"All rise for the United States District Court," the bailiff announced loudly.
The courtroom stood in absolute silence as Judge Harrison took his seat, adjusted his glasses, and looked down at the massive stack of federal indictments before him.
"This court has reviewed the complete evidentiary archive submitted by the Department of Justice, corroborating six months of financial embezzlement, industrial poisoning, corporate conspiracy, and international racketeering," Judge Harrison began, his deep voice echoing through the silent room. "The evidence is overwhelming, unassailable, and complete."
He paused, looking directly down at David and Jessica, who shrank back into their seats.
"David Sterling, Jessica Cole, and Julian Vance," Judge Harrison continued, his gaze sweeping across the defendants. "On all counts of attempted premeditated murder, corporate identity fraud, and high-level racketeering, this court finds you..."
David closed his eyes, holding his breath as the final hammer fell.
"...GUILTY ON ALL COUNTS."
A collective gasp rippled through the packed courtroom gallery, followed immediately by a surge of flashing camera shutters.
Judge Harrison raised his gavel, striking it down with a sharp, echoing blow.
"David Sterling is hereby sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Jessica Cole, forty years without parole. Julian Vance and the members of the Shadow Board, consecutive life terms in federal maximum-security confinement."
David slumped forward, burying his face in his hands as a soft, hysterical laugh escaped his lips. Jessica broke down completely, sobbing uncontrollably as federal marshals moved in behind them, gripping their shoulders to haul them away.
As the marshals dragged David past the medical gurney, he stopped for a fraction of a second, looking up into Evelyn's unblinking, victorious eyes.
"You ruined everything," David whispered hoarsely, tears streaming down his face.

Evelyn didn't need to speak. Her eye-tracking computer fired up automatically, projecting a single, devastating sentence across the courtroom's massive overhead screens for the entire world to see:
“I... only... reclaimed... what... was... mine.”
