Chapter 2 - The SetupThe silence in the exam room was so heavy it felt like lead. Ethan stood frozen, staring at Maya, the ghost of the past colliding violently with the reality of the little girl standing outside the door.

"Explain it," Ethan breathed, his voice cracking as he pointed a trembling finger at the floor where the phantom photos of the past still haunted his mind. "Tell me it was all a lie, Maya. Tell me Eleanor and her private investigators fabricated the entire thing."

Maya felt a cold, bitter laugh rise in her throat. Eight years. Eight years of running, building a fortress out of stethoscopes and sterile hospital corridors, and he still thought he had the right to cross-examine her like a defense attorney in a courtroom he owned.

"Fabricated?" Maya stepped closer, her white coat billowing slightly behind her. "You threw those photos in my face without asking a single question, Ethan. You let your mother dismantle our marriage in less than ten minutes because it was easier to believe I was a liar than to trust the woman who loved you."

"The timing..." Ethan swallowed hard, his hand gripping the edge of the examination table for support. "The timing was impossible. You were distant. You were hiding things in your coat pockets. You vanished without a trace the next morning."

"I vanished," Maya interrupted, her eyes flashing with fury, "because I went to the pharmacy to pick up prenatal vitamins, and when I came back to pack my bags, your mother had already hired movers to throw my clothes into the street. You weren't even home, Ethan. You were at your corporate office, letting your mother handle your dirty work while you hid behind your spreadsheets."

Ethan staggered back as if struck. "Prenatal... vitamins?"

Maya didn't flinch. "I was six weeks pregnant when you threw those pictures at my feet. I lost the pregnancy three days later, bleeding out alone in a cheap motel room because the stress of your mother's threats and your cowardice broke my body before it could even protect our child."

The color drained completely from Ethan's face. He looked at Maya not as a doctor or an ex-wife, but as an executioner. "You... you were pregnant?"

"And then, four years later, after I put my life back together brick by brick, I had Ava," Maya said coldly, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "A child who will never know what it's like to have a father who abandons her at the first whisper of doubt."

Before Ethan could process the devastation of her words, the door swung open again.
