Chapter 5 - Midnight IntruderMaya’s home was a modest, secure townhouse on the outskirts of the city—a stark contrast to the sprawling Lincoln Park estate she had fled years ago. That night, after putting Ava to sleep with a bedtime story and a warm glass of milk, Maya sat at her kitchen island reviewing patient charts under the amber glow of a desk lamp.

The digital clock on the microwave blinked: 11:42 PM.
A sudden, sharp knock echoed at her front door.
Maya’s spine stiffened. Nobody came to her house this late unless it was a medical emergency from the clinic, but her address was strictly confidential.
She stood up, walking silently to the entryway, peering through the peephole.
Ethan stood on her porch. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket anymore; his tie was loosened, his sleeves rolled up, and his expression was a mix of exhaustion and absolute desperation.
Maya unlocked the deadbolt, pulling the door open just wide enough to block the threshold.
"If you don't leave right now, I am calling the police," Maya said flatly.
"My mother knows," Ethan said without preamble, ignoring her threat entirely. He pushed his hand against the door, holding it open before she could slam it. "She had a spy watching me at the hospital. She knows you're here. She knows about Ava."
Maya’s breath caught. The color drained from her face. "You told her?"
"I didn't have to. The vultures are already circling," Ethan said, his voice urgent as he stepped closer, his chest heaving. "The board meeting is in twelve hours. If they win, they take the company, they take the trust fund, and my mother will use every ounce of her legal power to drag Ava into a custody battle just to punish you—and through you, to punish me."
"You brought this to my doorstep?" Maya hissed, her voice trembling with a mixture of terror and rage. "You swore you cut her off years ago!"
May you like
"I thought I had," Ethan said, his eyes locking onto hers with a fierce, terrifying intensity. "Marry me, Maya."
The words hung in the suffocating silence of the night.
