CHAPTER 2 — THE SECRET ONLY THE AIRCRAFT'S CREATOR COULD HAVE KNOWN

Nobody laughed anymore.
Not because they believed her.
But because of the certainty in her voice.
Samuel climbed onto the maintenance platform beside her.
"Explain."
Instead of answering immediately, Sofia aimed the flashlight deep inside the engine housing.
"There."
Samuel squinted.
"I don't see anything."
"You won't."
"Because you're looking for damaged parts."
"You should be looking for movement."
Confused, he leaned closer.
Sofia gently rotated one of the inspection mirrors.
Suddenly...
A tiny reflection appeared.
Samuel's face turned pale.
"No..."
Hidden behind a titanium support bracket...
Almost impossible to notice...
A microscopic retaining pin had shifted less than two millimeters.
Two.
Millimeters.
Small enough to escape every diagnostic computer.
Small enough that no sensor would ever detect it.
But large enough to create harmonic vibration at high thrust.
Samuel's hands began trembling.
"Impossible..."
One mechanic shouted from below,
"What did you find?"
Samuel couldn't answer.
He simply stared.
Sofia calmly continued.
"The vibration isn't coming from the compressor."
"It's resonance."
"The retaining pin expands under heat."
"At idle, everything looks normal."
"But at takeoff power..."
"...the oscillation multiplies until the engine tears itself apart."
Complete silence.
One engineer whispered,
"How... could she know that?"
Sofia looked at him.
"Because this isn't the first time it's happened."
Samuel swallowed hard.
"No."
"Only three aircraft in the world ever experienced this defect."
"Those reports were classified by the manufacturer."
The hangar suddenly became so quiet that everyone could hear the air conditioning.
Andres slowly stepped forward.
"Who are you?"
Sofia ignored the question.
Instead, she borrowed a small torque wrench.
She loosened one panel.
Adjusted the retaining assembly by less than one degree.
Retightened it.
Closed the panel.
"Start the auxiliary power."
Nobody moved.
She repeated calmly,
"Please."
Samuel nodded.
"Do it."
The mechanics hurried to obey.
Electric systems came alive.
The engine slowly rotated.
Everyone instinctively stepped backward.
The starter engaged.
The turbine accelerated.
Ten percent...
Twenty...
Forty...
Sixty...
The terrible whistle that had haunted the hangar all evening...
Never came.
The violent vibration...
Never appeared.
Instead...
The engine purred with the smooth, deep sound of a brand-new aircraft.
For several seconds...
No one breathed.
Then every monitor flashed green.
"ENGINE NORMAL."
The mechanics erupted in disbelief.
Someone dropped to the floor.
Another covered his mouth.
One engineer actually began applauding.
Samuel stared at Sofia as though he had seen a ghost.
"This..."
"This is impossible."
Andres looked at her with completely different eyes.
"You saved a deal worth four hundred million dollars."
"You've just done what the best engineers in my company couldn't."
He paused.
His earlier joke echoed in his mind.
"If you fix my airplane..."
"I'll marry you."
The workers laughed nervously.
But Sofia didn't.
She slowly removed her gloves.
Looked directly into Andres' eyes.
Then quietly asked a question that drained every drop of color from his face.
"Mr. Yavregi..."
"Before making promises..."
"...don't you think you should recognize the woman whose research your company bought eight years ago?"
The smile vanished from Andres' face.
Samuel's flashlight slipped from his hand and crashed onto the concrete floor.
Because he had finally remembered exactly where he had seen those eyes before.
Not on a janitor.
Not on an employee.
But on the cover of a confidential aerospace engineering journal...
Written by Dr. Sofia Alvarez—
the brilliant propulsion engineer who had mysteriously disappeared from the aviation industry after exposing a billion-dollar corporate conspiracy.
