Chapter 1 - The Silver Key

The interior of Dr. Daniel Thompson’s Audi was a sanctuary of heated leather and warmth—a sharp, violent contrast to the freezing Chicago night. Emma was trembling so hard her teeth chattered, but she refused to let go of Lily.

"I’m not a kidnapper," Emma blurted out, her voice raw.

Daniel kept his eyes on the road, his expression unreadable. "I know, Emma. You’re a sister who kept a promise. That’s something very different."

As the heater roared to life, the locket beneath Emma’s shirt fell against her collarbone. The metal, heated by her skin, clicked open. Daniel glanced down, and his hands suddenly spasmed on the steering wheel, causing the car to swerve slightly. He stared at the locket’s interior—a small, intricate engraving of a lighthouse and a specific set of coordinates.

"Where did you get that?" Daniel whispered, his voice losing its professional, calm cadence.

"It was my mom’s," Emma replied, pulling her coat tighter. "She said my dad left it for us. She said the truth leaves clues."

Daniel pulled the car over abruptly. He looked at Emma, really looked at her, for the first time. The fatigue in his eyes was replaced by a look of sheer, frantic recognition. "Emma, what is your mother’s name?"

"Sarah," she whispered. "Sarah Miller… but she changed it to Riley."

Daniel’s face drained of all color. He looked like a man who had just seen a ghost. "I wasn't just a pediatrician," he muttered, more to himself than to her. "I was a man who walked away from the only thing that mattered because I thought I was protecting them from my own enemies."
