The video continued. Her father explained that the "code" wasn't just data; it was proof of an international money-laundering ring involving some of the city's wealthiest philanthropists—the very people who funded the hospital where Sarah had been working.
"Mom wasn't sick because of pneumonia," Emma realized, horror dawning on her. "She was poisoned."
The men outside were not just mercenaries; they were the cleanup crew for the hospital board. Daniel was fighting them in the hallway, his grunts of exertion muffled by the heavy door. Emma heard a gunshot—sharp, echoing, and terrifying. Then, silence.
