Chapter 2 - The Mansion of Secrets

Daniel brought them to his sprawling, minimalist estate in Lincoln Park. It was cold, modern, and empty—a life of luxury built on a foundation of deep, haunting regret. He immediately handed Lily to his private nurse and turned his attention to Emma.

"Your father," Daniel began, pacing the marble floor, "was the most brilliant cryptographer I ever worked with. We were high-level corporate security consultants. We were hunted, Emma. Not by police, but by people who wanted the code he had developed."

"He didn't abandon us?" Emma asked, the question catching in her throat.

"He died trying to lead them away from you," Daniel confessed. "He gave me the key to his life’s work—the encryption that could ruin some of the most powerful people in the world. He told me, 'If I don't come back, use this to find my children when they are old enough to understand.'"

Daniel opened a wall safe behind a painting. Inside was not money, but a digital device that looked like a simple USB drive. "I spent ten years trying to find you. I thought you had vanished into the foster system, lost to history."

Suddenly, the security alarm in the mansion began to blare. A red light flashed in the hallway. Daniel’s eyes widened. "They’re here. They tracked the signal from the locket."
