Chapter 1 - THE TACTICAL RETREATThe morning sun cast long, cold shadows across the marble floors of the Voss estate, but the chill inside the room had nothing to do with the weather.

Adrian stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, his tailored jacket catching the light as he stared down at the sprawling manicured lawns. He looked every bit the billionaire titan he believed himself to be—untouchable, ruthless, and entirely convinced of his own supreme intellect.

Vanessa lingered near the doorway, her fingers lightly tracing the brass handle. She played her part with the precision of a seasoned actress—the soft sighs, the sympathetic tilt of her head, the quiet gazes designed to make Adrian feel like a protector rather than a predator.

“You’re making a mistake, Mara,” Adrian said without turning around. His voice carried that familiar, patronizing cadence that used to make me shrink. Used to.

“Am I?” I asked, sliding the untouched divorce papers back into their leather folder. I didn’t rush. Every movement was deliberate, calm, and maddeningly composed.

“You think you can drag this out in court?” Adrian spun around, his jaw clenched. “My legal team has spent the last month vacuuming every financial record associated with you. You have nothing. No independent income. No corporate backing. The moment the judge sees the settlement, you’ll be lucky to walk out with your shoes.”

Beside me, seven-year-old Ethan didn’t flinch. He had finished organizing his blueberries and was now systematically aligning his cutlery by exact millimeter measurements.

“Come on, Ethan,” I said, extending my hand to my son.

Ethan slid off his chair, his small hand slipping instantly into mine. As we walked past Adrian, my husband reached out and caught my wrist. His grip was hard, meant to bruise, meant to assert dominance one last time.

“Remember,” Adrian whispered, his breath hot against my ear. “Voss Meridian is mine. Everything you ever touched belongs to me. When you walk out those gates today, you are a ghost.”

I looked straight into his cold, dark eyes, let out a soft, melodic laugh, and pulled my wrist free.

“Be careful what you dig up, Adrian,” I murmured, my voice dropping an octave so only he could hear. “Sometimes, when you unearth a grave, you unleash what’s buried inside.”

We walked out of the mansion, leaving the billionaire and his mistress standing in the silence of their own arrogant delusion. What they didn't know was that the game hadn't just started—it had been rigged from the very first deal Adrian ever signed.
