Chapter 2 - THE MIDNIGHT AUDITThe private study of my temporary apartment smelled of old paper and bitter black coffee. The laptop screen cast a harsh, blue glow across my face as lines of encrypted code and offshore banking ledgers scrolled past with dizzying speed.

My phone buzzed on the mahogany desk.

Caller: Victor Vance.

Victor was my father’s former chief counsel and the only man alive who understood the intricate labyrinth of shell companies, blind trusts, and debt-conversion clauses that my family had quietly woven around the global financial sector.

“Mara,” Victor’s voice came through the speaker, raspy and urgent. “We have the complete extraction from the Voss Meridian primary servers. You were right. He didn't just siphon corporate liquidity to fund his private acquisitions; he used the company’s primary pension fund as collateral for a private leveraged buyout in the Cayman Islands.”

A cold smile touched my lips. “Is the documentation clean?”

“Immaculate,” Victor replied, a chuckle rumbling in his chest. “Every signature, every wire transfer, every fraudulent asset swap is stamped with Adrian’s private digital key. He thought he was untouchable because he bribed the local compliance officers. He forgot that federal securities fraud doesn’t care about local zip codes.”

“And the debt conversion?” I asked, leaning forward, resting my chin on my interlocked fingers.

“Activated the moment he officially filed the uncontested divorce petition this morning,” Victor said triumphantly. “Because of the pre-nuptial clause your father inserted—and which Adrian signed in a drunken stupor during their initial merger expansion ten years ago—the moment he initiated a separation under charges of ‘mental incompetence or moral turpitude,’ control of Voss Meridian reverts instantly to the primary lien holder.”

“Which is my private foundation,” I whispered.

“Which is you, Mara. By three o’clock tomorrow afternoon, Adrian Voss won’t just be locked out of his executive suite. He won't even legally own the chair he’s sitting on.”

I looked over toward the bedroom door. A sliver of light escaped beneath the frame. Inside, Ethan was fast asleep, clutching a small notebook filled with complex algorithmic sequences he had written out by hand—the same algorithmic formulas Adrian had dismissed as the product of a 'low IQ.'

“Sleep well, Adrian,” I whispered to the empty room. “Tomorrow, the bill comes due.”
