Chapter 6 - THE UNRAVELINGWithin twenty-four hours, the financial world collapsed around Adrian Voss like a house built on matchsticks.

The freeze order wasn't just a temporary injunction; it triggered an automated cascade across global markets. Because Voss Meridian’s debt had been secretly converted into voting control years prior, the moment the federal court validated the fraud charges, the primary lien holder—my private foundation—instantly exercised its legal right of foreclosure.

By Tuesday afternoon, security guards in dark suits were carrying boxes of personal belongings out of the executive suite at Voss Meridian Tower.

Adrian stood on the sidewalk outside the glass monolith, his expensive custom suit rumpled, his hair unkempt, screaming frantically into a dead smartphone whose service had been automatically suspended due to non-payment of corporate accounts.

“What do you mean my cards are declined?!” Adrian roared into the phone, his face purple with rage. “I’m Adrian Voss! Check the primary reserve!”

“There is no primary reserve, Mr. Voss,” a calm, robotic customer service voice replied over the speaker before clicking dead.

Parked across the street in a sleek, matte-black Mercedes SUV, I watched the spectacle unfold through the tinted window. In the backseat, Ethan was quietly assembling a Rubik’s cube, his small fingers flying across the plastic squares with mesmerizing speed.

The passenger door opened, and Victor Vance slid into the front seat, tossing a thick dossier onto the center console.

“It’s done, Mara,” Victor said, a satisfied grin spreading across his weathered face. “The board of directors has been dissolved. The emergency shareholders' meeting was unanimous. They voted to strip Adrian of his voting rights and appoint you as the interim Chief Executive Officer of Voss Meridian.”

I picked up the corporate seal resting in the velvet box—the very symbol of power Adrian had once used to try and crush me.

“And Vanessa?” I asked calmly.

Victor let out a dry, barking laugh. “Oh, she didn't waste any time. The moment she realized Adrian’s accounts were frozen and his penthouse apartment was seized by the bank, she packed her Louis Vuitton bags and took an Uber straight to the airport. She blocked his number before she even cleared security.”

I looked out the window again. Adrian was now standing alone on the pavement, abandoned by his lawyers, deserted by his mistress, and stripped of every single cent he had weaponized against his own family.

He looked toward our car, his bloodshot eyes locking onto mine through the tinted glass. For a second, his expression twisted into something desperate, pleading, pathetic.

I didn't roll down the window. I simply tapped the button, raising the privacy shade, and drove away.
