Chapter 9 - THE ULTIMATE BETRAYALFar across the city, in a dimly lit, rundown motel room that smelled of stale cigarette smoke and damp carpet, Adrian Voss stared numbly at the blinking screen of a burner smartphone.

His bank accounts—every single one—were permanently frozen. His credit cards were blacklisted. His passport had been flagged by federal authorities pending an ongoing criminal investigation into securities fraud and embezzlement.
Even worse, his legal team had completely vanished, refusing to answer his calls the moment they realized his corporate retainer had bounced.
There was a sharp, aggressive knock at the motel door.
Adrian flinched, scrambling off the sagging mattress. “Who is it?” he snapped, his voice cracking with panic.
“Open up, Adrian,” a sharp, abrasive female voice called back from the hallway.
Adrian unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door open.
Vanessa Hale stood in the doorway. But she wasn't wearing custom silk anymore. She wore a cheap polyester raincoat, her hair damp from the cold rain falling outside, her expression twisted into a mask of pure, venomous fury.
“You ruined me,” Vanessa hissed, pushing past him into the cramped room, slamming the door shut behind her.
“Me?!” Adrian barked, his face flushing red as he grabbed her by the shoulders. “You drained the secondary offshore accounts and transferred them to your cousin’s shell company! You helped sink me!”
“I was protecting my assets because I knew you were an arrogant fool!” Vanessa shrieked, shoving him back hard enough to send him stumbling against the peeling wallpaper. “You swore you had absolute control over Voss Meridian! You swore Mara was just a pathetic, stupid housewife!”
Adrian stared at her, his hands trembling violently at his sides as the brutal, horrifying reality finally settled deep into his bones.
He hadn't been betrayed by a mistress. He hadn't been defeated by bad luck.

He had been methodically, brilliantly, and ruthlessly dismantled by the very woman he had spent a decade underestimating.
And as he sank slowly onto the edge of the cheap mattress, burying his face in his trembling hands, the only sound in the room was the relentless ticking of the cheap plastic clock on the wall—counting down the seconds until his complete and total erasure.
