Chapter 2 - The Mask FallsThe atmosphere in the room shifted instantly from domestic violent confrontation to a cold, legal crime scene.

"Officers," Mireya squawked, regaining her composure with terrifying speed. She immediately threw her hands up, tears welling in her eyes with theatrical precision. "Thank God you're here! This psycho assaulted my son! She tied him up! Look at his wrists! Look at my poor boy!"

The lead officer, Commander Marcos, pulled off his cap and looked around the room. His eyes lingered on the bound Bruno, then on the broken dishes, and finally on Valeria’s bleeding ankle.

"Señora Salgado," Commander Marcos said, his tone dry and entirely devoid of sympathy. "We are not here because of a domestic disturbance call."

Mireya blinked, her rehearsed performance stalling. "What?"

The tall man standing beside the commander—dressed in a bespoke charcoal suit—stepped forward. He pulled a thick leather folder from his briefcase and opened it.

"My name is Attorney Santiago Vega," the man announced, his voice reverberating through the narrow hallway. "I represent the non-profit organization Mujeres Resilientes, as well as the personal estate of the late Judge Roberto Salgado."

Bruno’s head snapped up. "My grandfather?"

"Your late grandfather," Vega corrected coldly. "Who, before his passing six months ago, established a conditional trust worth twelve million pesos, designated entirely for his direct heir's legal spouse—provided that spouse demonstrated exceptional character and remained free from any domestic violence charges or coercive control dynamics."

Mireya’s face went from pale to ghostly grey. "That... that trust was left to Bruno! The lawyer said the execution of the trust required Bruno to be married for thirty days!"

"That is what your crooked family notary told you so you wouldn't destroy the assets before the marriage," Vega replied with a dark smile. "Judge Salgado knew his daughter-in-law. He knew you, Mireya. He knew how you drove his son into an early grave through financial extortion and emotional abuse. And he knew what kind of weak, spineless man you were raising Bruno to be."

Valeria walked over to the counter, picked up her phone, and handed the digital file directly to Commander Marcos.

"Everything is recorded," Valeria said calmly. "The extortion, the premeditated assault, the financial conspiracy to seize my salary, and the voice messages from Mireya Salgado explicitly instructing her son to commit physical violence."

Bruno began to panic, struggling against the plastic ties. "Mom! Do something! Tell them! Valeria coerced me! She’s a martial arts instructor, she set me up!"

"Shut up, Bruno!" Mireya screamed, her composure completely shattering. She spun on Valeria, her claws out, lunging toward the younger woman’s face. "You wretched bitch! You orchestrated this whole marriage! You knew about the trust!"

Valeria didn't even flinch. As Mireya’s hand flew toward her, Valeria smoothly stepped to the left, caught Mireya’s wrist with a firm grip, redirected her momentum, and guided her effortlessly against the kitchen wall.

Patsch!

Mireya’s forehead hit the drywall with a muffled thud. Before she could recover, Commander Marcos was behind her, snapping iron handcuffs onto her wrists.

"Mireya Salgado, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit physical assault, financial extortion, and solicitation of a felony," Marcos read off a card. "You have the right to remain silent..."

"Release me!" Mireya shrieked, kicking wildly at the floor. "Bruno! Call our lawyer! Call Uncle Hector!"

"Uncle Hector was arrested twenty minutes ago at his office in Tonala," Attorney Vega added casually, closing his leather binder. "It turns out laundering money through your mother's shell company wasn't as discreet as he thought."

Bruno fell backward off his chair, hitting the floor with a pathetic groan. His world had collapsed in less than fifteen minutes. The master manipulator who had spent his life hiding behind his mother's skirt was now trapped in a cage of his own making.

Valeria walked over to him, stooping down so she was at eye level with her three-day husband.

"You told me yesterday that a wife needs a lesson to learn obedience," Valeria murmured softly, her eyes blazing with an icy fire. "Class is officially in session, Bruno. And today's lesson is about consequences."
