Chapter 6 - The Trial of SilenceThe Jalisco State Supreme Court was packed to capacity forty-eight hours later.

The case of State of Jalisco v. Mireya Salgado & Bruno Salgado had captured the national spotlight. It was no longer just a domestic abuse trial; it had become a cultural symbol—a battle between the old, entrenched culture of marital dominance and the rising tide of women demanding unconditional legal accountability.
Bruno sat at the defense table in an orange jumpsuit, looking hollowed out and pathetic. His confidence had been entirely destroyed. Beside him sat Mireya, dressed in a sharp black suit, her jaw clenched tight, her eyes darting nervously around the courtroom.
The prosecutor opened the session by presenting the mountain of evidence: the audio recordings, the forensic financial audits, the emergency medical reports of Valeria’s ankle injuries, and the newly added charges of attempted murder via hiring Oscar Ruiz.
When it was the defense lawyer's turn, he stood up, adjusting his suit jacket.
"Your Honor," the lawyer announced confidently. "We do not dispute the authenticity of the recordings. However, we motion to dismiss all charges based on psychological provocation! My client, Bruno Salgado, was subjected to extreme emotional duress by the plaintiff, who intentionally entered this marriage under false pretenses to execute a corporate raid on the family's assets!"
The courtroom murmured.
The defense lawyer pointed a finger at Valeria, who sat quietly beside Attorney Vega. "Valeria knew about the trust! She manipulated my client’s feelings, provoked an argument in his home, and used her physical training to entrap an emotionally unstable young man!"
The judge, a formidable woman named Justice Elena Morales, looked over her glasses at Valeria. "Does the plaintiff wish to address this claim?"
Valeria stood up. She didn't look at the defense attorney. She looked directly at Bruno.
"Your Honor," Valeria said, her voice echoing clearly off the wood-paneled walls. "I would like to ask my husband one question under oath."
The defense attorney objected immediately. "This is highly irregular!"
"Overruled," Justice Morales declared. "The defendant will take the stand."
Bruno was escorted to the witness box, trembling as he took the oath. He avoided making eye contact with his mother, who was glaring at him with fierce intensity from the defense table.
Valeria walked slowly toward the witness stand, stopping a few feet away from Bruno.
"Bruno," Valeria said softly. "On the night you kicked over the dining table, before I turned on my phone camera, what was the very first thing you said to me when you walked through the door?"
Bruno swallowed hard, his throat dry. "I... I don't remember..."
"Let me refresh your memory," Valeria said, pulling a tiny cassette player from her pocket. "This is an unedited audio recording from the security camera I installed in the hallway two days before our wedding."
Mireya’s eyes went wide. "No..."
Valeria hit play.
Bruno’s voice echoed through the courtroom, raw, aggressive, and crystal clear:
“I don't care if you're tired from work, Valeria. You belong to me now. My mother told me how to break you, and by the end of this week, you won't even speak unless I give you permission.”
The silence in the courtroom was terrifying.
Bruno burst into tears right on the witness stand, putting his head in his hands, sobbing uncontrollably. "I’m sorry! I’m sorry! She made me do it! My mother told me if I didn't make Valeria submit, she would cut me out of the will! She threatened to leave me with nothing!"
"You coward!" Mireya shrieked, jumping out of her chair and screaming across the courtroom at her son. "You pathetic, weak coward! I built everything for you!"
"Order in the court!" Justice Morales slammed her gavel down repeatedly. "Gavel! Silence!"
Mireya didn't stop. She was hyperventilating, her face flushed red, lunging toward the witness stand before court bailiffs tackled her to the floor, pinning her down right in front of the judge’s bench.
"Take her out!" Justice Morales ordered, her voice like thunder. "Contempt of court! The jury will disregard the defense's claims of provocation!"

As Mireya was dragged out of the courtroom, kicking and screaming obscenities, Valeria stood still, watching her former mother-in-law disappear behind the heavy steel doors.
The illusion of the powerful, indestructible Salgado matriarch was finally gone.
