Chapter 8 - The Unexpected HeirSix months later.

The opening ceremony of The Valeria Salgado Center for Women's Autonomy was a massive success. Over three hundred guests attended, including city officials, legal advocates, and dozens of women who had graduated from Valeria’s self-defense programs over the years.

The facility was state-of-the-art—offering free legal aid, psychological counseling, vocational training, and advanced physical defense courses.

As the evening wound down and the last guests departed, Valeria stood in her new second-floor office, looking over the blueprints for an expansion into neighboring states.

A quiet knock sounded at her door.

Valeria looked up. "Come in, Santiago."

The door opened, but it wasn't Santiago Vega.

A young woman walked in. She was no older than twenty-two, wearing a faded denim jacket, holding a worn leather binder against her chest. She looked nervous, her hands trembling slightly as she stepped into the room.

"Valeria Salgado?" the girl asked softly.

"Yes," Valeria replied, standing up from her desk. "Can I help you? The enrollment center downstairs opens at eight tomorrow morning."

"I’m not here to enroll," the girl said, swallowing hard. She walked closer to the desk and laid the leather binder down. "I came because of this."

Valeria looked down at the binder. Stamped on the front in gold foil were the initials: R.S.

Roberto Salgado.

Valeria’s eyes narrowed. "Where did you get this?"

"My name is Sofia," the girl said, her voice shaking with emotion. "I’m Judge Roberto Salgado’s secret daughter."

Valeria froze.

Sofia looked up, her eyes filled with tears, but her jaw set in a line of fierce determination that looked hauntingly familiar.

"My mother was Judge Salgado’s personal nurse during the last three years of his life," Sofia explained. "Mireya didn't just steal money from the trust... she paid off the hospital staff to forge my mother's death certificate after I was born, forcing my mother to go into hiding in Sinaloa for twenty years."

Valeria opened the leather binder. Inside were legal birth certificates, DNA results certified by a federal lab, and a handwritten letter from Judge Roberto Salgado, dated just three days before his death.

Valeria read the last line of the letter aloud:

“To my true heir, Sofia: If you are reading this, it means Valeria has cleared the weeds from our family tree. Go to her. She will know what to do with the second vault in Switzerland.”

Valeria looked up from the page, her heart beating fast.

"A second vault?" Valeria whispered.

Sofia nodded, pulling a small, heavy brass key from her pocket and placing it next to the binder.

"My father left an international account worth fifty million dollars," Sofia said softly. "And he left a message in the binder for you."

Valeria turned the page. Written in the Judge’s distinct, elegant calligraphy were four final words:

“THE REAL GAME BEGINS.”

Valeria stared at the key, then looked up at the young woman standing in front of her. The Salgado family saga wasn't an ending—it was merely the prelude to a much larger, global reckoning.

Valeria picked up the brass key, feeling its weight in her palm. A slow, dangerous smile crept across her face.

"Welcome to the team, Sofia," Valeria said softly. "Let’s go open a vault."
