CHAPTER 1 — The Hallway Where Monsters Become Helpless

The scream echoed through Mercy Harbor Medical Center long after the emergency doors slammed shut.
Not because it was loud.
Because every person in the hallway knew it came from someone who might never scream again.
Ethan Carter had spent half his life convincing Chicago that fear belonged to everyone else.
Judges feared him.
Politicians avoided crossing him.
Business rivals disappeared from headlines after a single meeting.
People lowered their voices whenever his name surfaced.
But standing outside Operating Room Three...
Ethan couldn't even breathe.
The silver-haired nurse studied him carefully.
"Sir?"
"You look like you're about to collapse."
He barely heard her.
Behind those sealed doors...
Grace.
Nine months ago she had stood inside their tiny apartment holding two coffee mugs.
Rain hammered against the windows.
She smiled nervously.
"I think something wonderful is happening."
He never let her finish.
Instead, he packed his jacket.
Walked to the door.
Without turning around, he said the sentence that would destroy both of them.
"You deserve someone who isn't me."
Grace didn't chase him.
She didn't scream.
She simply whispered four words that haunted him every night afterward.
"You already made that choice."
He left.
Never looked back.
Until now.
A young doctor burst through the operating doors, removing bloody gloves.
"Family?"
Nobody answered.
The doctor scanned the hallway.
"Is anyone here with Grace Miller?"
Ethan stepped forward instinctively.
"I—"
Before he could finish...
Another woman reached the desk.
Gray cardigan.
Worn shoes.
Tears streaming down her face.
"I'm her sister," she gasped.
"My name is Emily."
The doctor's expression changed instantly.
"We need consent immediately."
Emily's knees nearly gave out.
"What happened?"
The doctor inhaled deeply.
"Grace suffered acute heart failure during labor."
"The baby has gone into severe distress."
"We're losing both."
Emily covered her mouth.
"No..."
The doctor continued.
"We need emergency surgery, but Grace signed a legal directive months ago."
Emily frowned.
"What directive?"
"If only one life can be saved..."
The doctor hesitated.
"...she requested we save her baby."
Silence.
Even the monitors inside seemed quieter.
Ethan felt something inside him fracture.
She had been willing to die...
To protect their child.
A child he never even knew existed.
Emily suddenly noticed him standing there.
Recognition flashed across her face.
Then hatred.
Pure.
Burning.
"You."
Every nurse turned.
Emily pointed directly at Ethan.
"This is your fault."
The hallway froze.
"You abandoned her."
"You broke her heart."
"You never answered a single message."
"You didn't even know she was carrying your son."
Natalie appeared behind Ethan.
Her perfectly styled hair now disheveled from running.
She looked between them.
"Son?"
Emily laughed bitterly.
"You didn't know?"
She stared directly into Natalie's eyes.
"Congratulations."
"You've been dating a man whose pregnant ex has been working double shifts to pay medical bills while he bought designer watches."
Natalie's face drained of color.
She slowly turned toward Ethan.
"Ethan..."
"Tell me she isn't talking about you."
He couldn't.
Because everything she said...
Was true.
Inside the operating room...
A long continuous alarm suddenly filled the hallway.
Every doctor moved at once.
The doors burst open again.
"Crash cart!"
"Now!"
And Ethan Carter realized that the woman he had convinced himself to forget...
May you like
Was about to die without ever hearing him say the only words that mattered.
"I'm sorry."
