CHAPTER 3 — The Man the Baby Refused to Fear

The neonatal intensive care unit was quieter than any church Ethan had ever entered.

Machines whispered.

Tiny monitors blinked.

Behind layers of glass...

His son slept inside an incubator no larger than a suitcase.

Six pounds.

Three ounces.

Dark hair.

Grace's nose.

His eyes.

The nurse smiled gently.

"You can touch him."

Ethan hesitated.

"I've never held a baby."

"Then start with one finger."

He slid one trembling finger through the opening.

The baby's tiny hand wrapped around it instantly.

Firm.

Certain.

As though recognizing someone he had never met.

Something inside Ethan collapsed.

Not dramatically.

Not all at once.

Just enough to let light in.

Marcus stood silently behind him.

"I've seen grown men terrified of you."

Ethan never looked away from Noah.

"I'm terrified of him."

Marcus frowned.

"The baby?"

"No."

"The man he'll become if I don't change."

Before Marcus could respond...

Three men in expensive suits entered the hallway.

Board members from Carter Holdings.

"Mr. Carter."

"We have contracts waiting."

"The investors—"

Ethan raised one hand.

"They can wait."

They exchanged uneasy glances.

"Sir..."

"The docks."

"The negotiations."

"The security business."

"The expansion."

Ethan looked through the nursery window again.

"For years I thought building an empire made me powerful."

"It didn't."

"It only made me busy."

One executive cleared his throat.

"So... what's your decision?"

Ethan slowly smiled.

"The empire is over."

Silence.

"I'm selling every company that feeds on fear."

Marcus stared.

The executives stared.

Even the nurse stopped writing.

"We're creating something else."

"What?"

Ethan answered without hesitation.

"A children's heart foundation."

"In Grace's name."

At that exact moment...

An alarm sounded from the intensive care floor.

Doctors rushed toward Grace's room.

Ethan's heart stopped.

Dr. Brooks appeared in the doorway.

Her face unreadable.

"Ethan..."

He couldn't breathe.

She smiled.

"She squeezed my hand."

One tiny movement.

One impossible sign.

"She heard someone reading a letter beside her bed."

Emily looked toward Ethan.

Slowly...

Very slowly...

The hatred left her eyes.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

Just the smallest possibility that Grace had been right all along.

Maybe...

The man she had always believed still existed...

May you like

Had finally found his way home.
