CHAPTER 2 — The Letter Hidden Beneath the Crib

Forty-three minutes.

That was how long Ethan stood outside Operating Room Three without moving.

No phone.

No meetings.

No guards.

No empire.

Only the red surgical light above the door.

It never turned off.

Emily sat curled into a plastic chair.

Neither of them spoke.

Hatred required energy.

Grief required none.

Finally...

The doors opened.

Dr. Amelia Brooks removed her surgical cap.

Her exhausted eyes met Emily's first.

"We saved the baby."

Emily burst into tears.

"What about Grace?"

The doctor's silence answered everything.

Emily's face crumbled.

"No..."

Dr. Brooks looked down.

"We restarted her heart twice."

"She's alive..."

"...but barely."

"She's in a medically induced coma."

"The next twenty-four hours will decide everything."

Relief crashed into despair so quickly neither emotion had room to settle.

Then the doctor looked toward Ethan.

"You."

She had clearly recognized him from earlier.

"Grace left instructions."

Ethan blinked.

"For me?"

The doctor nodded.

"If anything happened..."

"...you were to receive this."

She handed him a thick white envelope.

Across the front...

One sentence.

Written in Grace's handwriting.

Only if he finally comes.

His hands shook.

Inside...

There was no accusation.

No anger.

Only a folded ultrasound picture.

Beside it...

A handwritten letter.

Ethan,

If you're reading this...

Then fate has a strange sense of humor.

I told myself a thousand times I would never need you again.

Maybe I was wrong.

Maybe life knew something I didn't.

You never knew about the baby.

I wanted to tell you.

Twenty-seven times.

I counted.

Every birthday.

Every holiday.

Every night I sat with my phone in my hand.

I deleted every message.

Because if you stayed away...

I wanted it to be your decision.

Not guilt.

His name is Noah.

He kicks whenever someone laughs.

He loves music already.

Whenever I sang...

He stopped moving.

Like he was listening.

If I don't survive...

Please don't raise him to become the man you used to be.

Raise him into the man you still have time to become.

I always believed that man existed.

Even when you didn't.

—Grace

By the time Ethan finished reading...

The paper was soaked with tears.

Marcus quietly approached.

"Boss..."

For the first time in fifteen years...

His voice broke.

"I don't think you're supposed to call me that anymore."

Marcus looked confused.

Ethan slowly folded the letter.

"My son is alive."

"My life starts today."

Natalie watched everything from across the hallway.

She finally understood.

She had never been competing with another woman.

She had been competing...

With the only person Ethan had ever truly loved.

Without another word...

She removed the diamond ring from her finger.

Placed it on the waiting-room table.

And walked away forever.

Ethan didn't stop her.

He never even noticed.

Because down the hallway...

A neonatal nurse appeared carrying the tiniest hospital bracelet he had ever seen.

Across it...

May you like

One name.

Noah Carter Miller.
