Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

The arrest warrant was executed with surgical precision. At dawn, tactical units swarmed the Carter estate, breaking the pristine morning silence with the heavy boots of federal and local law enforcement.
Daniel Carter didn’t run. When Detective Brooks kicked open the massive double doors of his executive study, Daniel was sitting behind his mahogany desk, sipping black coffee as if he were waiting for a routine business associate.
"Daniel Carter, you’re under arrest for the murder of Clara Carter," Brooks announced, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings as handcuffs clicked into place behind Daniel’s back.
Daniel didn't flinch. He didn't curse, nor did he scream his innocence. Instead, a slow, chilling smile spread across his lips. He tilted his head back, looking up at Brooks through heavy-lidded eyes.
"You really think you've got me, don't you, Detective?" Daniel whispered, his tone dripping with absolute arrogance.
"We have an audio recording of your wife accusing you of planning her murder, financial documents proving motive, and physical evidence of a struggle," Brooks replied smoothly, hauling him to his feet. "I'd say we have a bit more than just a hunch."
"An audio recording," Daniel chuckled, a low, throaty sound that grated on Brooks's nerves. "You poor, naive fool. Do you honestly think a multi-billion-dollar tech mogul leaves his digital footprint unprotected?"
During the arraignment later that afternoon, Daniel’s high-priced defense attorney—a shark named Victor Vance, unrelated to Emily—slammed a flurry of motions onto the judge's desk. Within twenty minutes, the prosecution's airtight case began to unravel in ways nobody anticipated.
The audio file? The defense presented metadata proving it had been digitally altered using advanced AI voice-synthesis software—a file created after Clara's death.
The financial documents? Filed under a shell company legally owned by an overseas trust that had no direct legal tie to Daniel himself.
And the physical bruises on Clara's wrists? The defense medical expert testified they were consistent with a violent seizure disorder that Clara had secretly suffered from for years—a medical history that Daniel had conveniently "protected her privacy by keeping hidden."
Sitting in the courtroom gallery, Emily went pale as a sheet, gripping the wooden pew until her knuckles bled. "He's manipulating everything," she whispered, her voice choking with horror. "He planned the counter-attack before he even pushed her."

Judge Morrison banged his gavel, his expression grim. "Without verifiable, unalterable proof of foul play, the court finds insufficient probable cause to hold the defendant on murder charges. Mr. Carter is released on his own recognizance pending further investigation."
Daniel walked out of the courthouse surrounded by flashing camera lights, flashing a triumphant grin to the world. He had won round one. But Detective Brooks was far from finished.
