Chapter 5 - The Hidden Compartment

Midnight at the Carter estate. The police tape had been removed following the judge's dismissal, leaving the grand mansion eerily silent and abandoned.

Except for one man.

Detective Brooks slipped through a side window like a shadow, moving with absolute stealth through the darkened corridors. He didn't have a warrant this time—he was operating purely on instinct and sheer desperation. If the legal system was going to let a murderer walk because of technicalities and bought-off experts, Brooks was going to find the real, physical smoking gun with his own two hands.

He made his way up the grand staircase—the very spot where Clara had met her tragic end. He crouched down, running his tactical flashlight along the carved wooden baseboards near the top landing.

Clara’s voice memo mentioned his home office safe. But Brooks knew from the search logs that the safe had only contained standard corporate paperwork. A man as paranoid as Daniel Carter wouldn't keep his real secrets in plain sight.

He headed straight for Daniel's private study. Rushing to the massive bookshelf behind the mahogany desk, Brooks began pressing down on the wooden panels.

Click.

A secret door popped open with a pneumatic hiss, revealing a hidden alcove no larger than a closet. Inside hung a single computer terminal, completely encrypted, glowing with a soft, pulsing green light. Next to it sat a leather-bound physical journal.

Brooks snatched the journal, flipping open the pages. It was handwritten—old school, impossible to hack or alter digitally.

His eyes scanned the first entry, and his breath caught in his throat.

“March 14: Clara is becoming a liability. She threatened to expose the embezzlement scheme to the board. I’ve staged the insurance policy to pay out thirty million upon accidental death. The steps are wet tonight. Perfect timing.”

Page after page detailed a calculated, cold-blooded execution plan, complete with contingency measures for police investigations, bribed experts, and fabricated medical records.

"Looking for your bedtime reading, Detective?"

Brooks spun around, his service weapon drawn in a fraction of a second.

Standing in the doorway of the hidden alcove was Daniel Carter. He wasn't cuffed. He wasn't scared. He was holding a sleek, black revolver, and the barrel was pointed squarely at Detective Brooks's chest.
