Chapter 7 - Fire and Truth

"Get up!" Brooks roared, grabbing Daniel by the collar of his expensive shirt and hauling him upright through the smoke-filled corridor.

Coughing violently, Daniel thrashed against the grip, but the adrenaline-fueled detective dragged him through the burning study and out toward the grand staircase. The heat was blistering, the smoke thick enough to choke out consciousness.

Just as they reached the top landing, a massive wooden beam from the ceiling snapped with a deafening crack and crashed down directly behind them, cutting off their escape route to the front door.

"We're trapped!" Daniel screamed, panic finally breaking through his icy facade. The mask was gone; beneath the billionaire exterior was a terrified, pathetic coward. "We're going to die here!"

"Not today," Brooks yelled over the roar of the inferno. He looked down at the grand staircase—the exact spot where Clara had fallen.

Dragging Daniel with him, Brooks lunged toward the ledge. With one massive heave, he threw Daniel over the railing.

Daniel screamed as he plummeted downward, crashing through a safety net of indoor foliage and landing hard on the plush lower foyer carpet, bruised, battered, but alive.

Seconds later, a team of firefighters—alerted by an anonymous tip that had been sent to dispatch just moments before Brooks entered the house—burst through the front doors with high-pressure hoses, beating back the wall of fire.

As the smoke cleared, firefighters swarmed the foyer.

Daniel lay coughing on the floor, his face covered in soot, his designer suit scorched and ruined. He looked up, his vision blurred by smoke and tears, only to see Detective Brooks standing over him, holding the leather journal—completely intact, wrapped safely in a fireproof evidence pouch that Brooks had tucked securely inside his tactical vest.

"How...?" Daniel rasped, blood trickling from a cut on his forehead.

"Backups, Daniel," Brooks said, snapping steel cuffs onto the billionaire's wrists for the very last time. "Just like you taught me. Never rely on just one copy."
