Chapter 8 - The Ultimate Twist

Three months later, the courtroom was packed to absolute capacity. The trial of the decade had gripped the entire nation. Every news outlet broadcasted the dramatic downfall of tech titan Daniel Carter.
The jury returned in record time.
Guilty of first-degree murder. Guilty of financial fraud. Guilty of arson.
Judge Morrison slammed the gavel down with finality. "Sentence: Life imprisonment without the possibility of parole."
As the bailiffs hauled a broken, silent Daniel Carter away in heavy chains, he locked eyes with Emily Vance one last time in the gallery. Emily gave him a cold, vindictive smile, turning her head away as he disappeared through the heavy oak doors.
Later that evening, Detective Brooks stood on the balcony of his precinct office, smoking a quiet cigar as the city lights twinkled peacefully in the distance.
His phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out and looked at the screen. A text message from an unknown number.
“Case closed, Detective. Thank you for finishing what we started.”
Brooks frowned, staring at the message. He quickly tapped out a reply: Who is this?
Within seconds, a new message popped up, accompanied by a digital attachment:
“Did you really think Clara didn't have a twin sister, Detective? Clara was the soft one. The accountant. I’m Emily... and I’m the one who engineered the entire divorce, set up the safety triggers, and made sure Daniel walked right into the trap from day one. Enjoy your promotion, Brooks. Some secrets are safer buried in the ashes.”

Brooks stared at the screen in absolute shock as the attachment opened automatically—a security camera video showing Emily standing across the street from the burning mansion three months ago, watching the flames with a calm, chilling smile, before vanishing silently into the dark night.
The screen went black.
