Chapter 3 - The Smiling ReplyAt 10:15 PM, the front door clicked open.

Footsteps echoed softly in the hallway. Daniel walked into the apartment, carrying a takeout bag from an upscale bistro and wearing the exact same gray sweater he had packed for his "client retreat" three weeks ago.

“Hey, honey,” Daniel called out, his voice smooth, carrying that practiced, casual warmth that used to make Olivia feel safe. “Sorry I'm late. The traffic coming back from the Eastside was an absolute nightmare.”

Olivia didn't move from her desk. She didn't turn around.

“Did you get much work done?” she asked, her voice dangerously calm.

Daniel paused in the doorway of the office, setting the bag down on the edge of the credenza. A subtle flash of tension crossed his eyes before he smoothed his features into an affectionate smile. “Yeah, brutal session with the marketing team. We’re finally closing that Vanguard partnership loop.”

Olivia finally turned in her chair. She looked at him—really looked at him—not as a wife of eight years, but as an analyst examining a deeply flawed piece of code.

She picked up her phone, unlocked it, and slid it across the wooden desk so it rested right in front of him.

The screen displayed the photograph Sophia had sent ten minutes ago.

Daniel froze. The color drained from his face so fast he looked carved out of chalk. His lips parted, his hands hovering awkwardly over the desk as his brain desperately tried to calculate a lie that didn't exist.

“Liv... where did you... let me explain, it’s not—she sent that to you, didn't she? Sophia is unstable, she—”

“Stop, Daniel,” Olivia said, her voice cutting through his panic like a scalpel.

She stood up slowly, walking over to her laptop and hitting a single key. A secondary screen popped up, displaying the AWS transfer logs, the corporate entity registration for Apex Vanguard Solutions filed two weeks ago in Delaware, and the list of matching officers: Daniel Vance and Sophia Reynolds.

“You didn't just break our marriage,” Olivia whispered, stepping close enough to see the panic sweating on his brow. “You tried to steal a forty-million-dollar IP portfolio and thought I wouldn't notice because I was too busy being a good wife.”

Daniel swallowed hard, his eyes darting frantically toward the door. “We can share it, Liv. We can make a deal—'

“There’s no deal,” Olivia interrupted, offering a small, razor-sharp smile that made him recoil. “By the time you get your phone out to call Sophia, the federal intellectual property injunction has already been automatically dispatched to Vanguard’s legal team. And as for the divorce papers? My lawyer filed them at 9:50 PM.”

She picked up her blue ceramic mug, took a calm sip of her cold tea, and pointed toward the front door.

“Your Uber is waiting downstairs, Daniel. Don't forget your sweater.”
