CHAPTER 1 – The Last Notice

The red stamp screamed OVERDUE across the stack of unpaid bills.

Ethan Carter stared at the papers without blinking. Rent. Electricity. Medical debt. Every envelope carried another reminder that life was collapsing faster than he could fix it.

His seven-year-old son, Noah, sat quietly behind him, hugging a worn teddy bear. He had stopped asking why the lights flickered or why dinner kept getting smaller every week.

"Dad... are we losing the house?" Noah whispered.

Ethan forced a smile.

"No, buddy. I'll figure something out."

But they both knew he was lying.

Just two months earlier, Ethan had a stable engineering job, a comfortable home, and plans to send Noah to the best school in town.

Then the company suddenly shut down.

His savings disappeared paying hospital bills after Noah's emergency surgery.

His wife couldn't handle the pressure.

She packed a suitcase one rainy morning and walked away without looking back.

Now Ethan sat surrounded by boxes, overdue notices, and silence.

As he reached for another envelope, something metallic slid onto the table.

A tiny old brass key.

He frowned.

It wasn't his.

Attached to it was a faded handwritten tag.

"For Noah. When everything else is gone."

His heart froze.

There was no return address.

No signature.

Only handwriting that looked hauntingly familiar...

The exact same handwriting his late father used before disappearing twenty-five years ago.

Ethan had buried every memory of that man.

Or so he thought.

The room suddenly felt colder.

Because whoever had mailed this knew things no stranger possibly could.
