Chapter 16 - The Master's Study

The sprawling estate in upstate New York looked like a fortress disguised as a historic country manor, surrounded by acres of dense, private woodlands and iron security gates. As our black SUV rolled up the winding gravel driveway, the massive wooden front doors swung open automatically, welcoming the new master home.

Inside, the mansion was breathtaking—high vaulted ceilings, walls lined with priceless art, and a massive mahogany staircase leading to the upper levels. But my destination was Carl’s private study on the third floor, a room I had never seen during our time together in the city.

Marcus and Elena stood guard outside the double doors as I pushed them open. The room smelled of old paper, leather, and faint cedarwood. A massive oak desk sat in front of a wall of floor-to-ceiling bookshelves filled with rare volumes on history, tactical strategy, and law.

I walked over to the bookshelf behind the desk, remembering Elena’s words about the false wall. Running my fingers along the carved wooden molding of the third shelf from the top, I found a small brass latch shaped like a chess rook. I pressed it down.

With a soft, mechanical click, a section of the bookshelf swung outward, revealing a hidden alcove illuminated by a gentle, warm amber light.

Inside the alcove rested a single velvet-lined wooden box.

My hands trembled slightly as I reached out, lifted the lid, and looked inside. Resting on the velvet was a heavy, platinum wedding band encrusted with dark diamonds—a match to the simple silver band Carl had worn during our brief, quiet ceremony in his living room. Beneath it lay a final, handwritten letter on thick cream-colored stationery.

I unfolded the letter and began to read the familiar, elegant handwriting:

May you like

“If you are reading this, Oanh, it means you survived the wolves, you claimed your crown, and you proved that everything I saw in you was true. I never meant to drag you into the darkness, my love. But the world is full of predators, and I couldn't leave my lamb unprotected. You were never just a hospice nurse to me. You were my salvation. Wear this ring, and remember: the game is yours to play now.”

A tear slipped down my cheek, but a fierce, unbroken smile touched my lips. I slipped the heavy platinum ring onto my finger. It fit perfectly.
