Chapter 20 - The True Queen

Six months had passed since Carl’s funeral.
The global syndicate operated with flawless precision under my absolute command. The international council respected the borders, the domestic factions maintained absolute order, and the federal agencies had long since stopped looking for ghosts in the machine.
I stood on the balcony of the grand estate, wearing a tailored white silk suit that contrasted sharply with the dark night—a subtle nod to the simple white T-shirt I had worn on the day of our quiet, improvised wedding in his living room.
The heavy platinum wedding band gleamed brightly on my finger under the moonlight.
People had looked at my story and seen a tragedy—a dying man trapping an innocent nurse in a world of blood and shadows. But as I looked out over the vast empire that was now entirely mine, I knew the true reality of what had happened.
Carl hadn't trapped me in a cage. He had broken open the door of the small, powerless life I was trapped in, handed me the keys to the world, and taught me how to rule.
My phone buzzed gently in my pocket. I pulled it out and looked at the screen. An anonymous notification popped up from a secure, encrypted server—a scheduled digital message set to trigger exactly six months after his passing.
The message contained only a single sentence:
May you like
“Checkmate, my queen.”
A soft, genuine smile touched my lips. I lowered the phone, raised my glass of wine to the endless, star-filled sky, and stepped back inside to rule my empire.
