Chapter 5 - The Woman in the Shadows

I recoiled instinctively, stepping behind Marcus. "Who are you? What is this place?"

The silver-haired woman set her glass down with a sharp clink and stood up. She wore a tailored black pantsuit that commanded absolute authority. "My name is Elena. And for twenty years, I was Carl Vance's most trusted partner—and the woman who managed his accounts while he played sick in that dreary hospice room."

"Partner?" I stared at her, my mind reeling. "You mean... you knew about him? About everything?"

"I didn't just know about him, darling; I built the foundation he stood on," Elena said, walking toward me with measured, elegant steps. She stopped a few feet away, her green eyes scanning me up and down with clinical detachment. "Carl was a brilliant tactician, but he was getting soft toward the end. He spent his final months obsessing over you, watching your security feeds, making sure you were fed, making sure no one touched you. And then, in a stroke of absolute madness, he decided to make you his sole heir."

"I didn't ask for this!" I shouted, the overwhelming stress finally fracturing my composure. "I just wanted to help people! I volunteered at the hospice because I wanted to bring a little comfort to people who had no one! I didn't ask to be hunted by syndicates, I didn't ask to inherit a criminal empire, and I certainly didn't ask to marry a monster!"

Elena’s expression didn't soften; if anything, it hardened into something colder. "A monster? Perhaps. But he was your husband. And in the world you've just stepped into, blood and vows are the only currencies that matter. The moment you signed that marriage certificate, you painted a target on your back. But you also inherited the ultimate shield."

She turned toward the massive mahogany desk and pressed a hidden panel on the side. A concealed drawer slid open silently, revealing a heavy, old-fashioned leather-bound journal with a brass lock.

"The Black Ledger," Elena whispered. "Every enemy Carl ever made wants this book. Every corrupt official wants it destroyed. And the men who chased you through the alleys tonight? They work for Victor Thorne—Carl’s former second-in-command who thinks he has the right to usurp the throne."

She looked straight into my eyes, her gaze unyielding. "Victor is coming for you, Oanh. He won't stop until he finds you and tears this bunker apart. So you have a choice. You can curl up in a corner and wait for them to find you, or you can pick up your husband's crown and learn how to rule."
