Chapter 18 - The Siege of the Estate

The night sky over upstate New York was pitch black, swallowed entirely by heavy storm clouds that promised a torrential downpour. The wind howled through the dense pine trees surrounding the estate, rustling the branches and masking the low, rhythmic hum of approaching helicopter rotors in the distance.
From the second-floor balcony of the master suite, standing in the shadows with my hands resting calmly on the iron railing, I watched the thermal imaging monitors display the glowing red heat signatures of four figures fast-roping down into the northern edge of the estate's sprawling gardens.
Dmitri Volkov and his elite vanguard had arrived.
They moved with chilling, military precision, fan-forming across the manicured lawns toward the rear service entrance of the mansion. They thought they were hunting a frightened, inexperienced young woman who had stumbled into a criminal empire by sheer luck. They had no idea they were walking directly into the center of a spider's web meticulously spun by Carl Vance and perfected by his successor.
Volkov raised his silenced assault rifle, signaling his men to breach the heavy oak service doors. With a swift, coordinated strike, explosive charges blew the door off its hinges in a muffled thud, and the operatives surged inside the mansion.
"They're in," Elena’s voice whispered through my encrypted earpiece from the subterranean security bunker. "Initiating lockdown sequence alpha."
Instantly, the heavy steel security shutters slammed shut across every window and door on the ground floor, plunging the intruders into total darkness. Before Volkov’s men could activate their night-vision goggles, the automated defense grid deployed high-intensity strobe lights and sonic disorientation pulses throughout the corridors.

Shouts of confusion echoed through the intercom monitors as the mercenaries stumbled blindly, dropping their weapons as the disorienting frequencies overwhelmed their nervous systems.
"Marcus, secure the hallway," I ordered quietly into my comms, stepping back into the warmly lit study and waiting calmly for the inevitable knock on the door.
