Chapter 9 - The Queen's Gambit

Three weeks after Carl’s funeral, the underground world of the city had completely restructured itself under my absolute command.

The old guard—the corrupt politicians, the compromised police chiefs, the rival syndicate underbosses who thought they could carve up Carl’s empire—had all received their personalized packages containing excerpts from the Black Ledger. Within forty-eight hours, resignations flooded city hall, high-profile arrests dominated the morning news, and the remaining criminal factions quietly fell in line behind the new master of the syndicate.

I sat behind the massive mahogany desk in the subterranean bunker, wearing a tailored black silk pantsuit that mirrored Elena's. The gentle hum of the computer monitors washed over the quiet room as I reviewed the international asset transfers on the central screen. Millions of dollars moving effortlessly across global accounts—all legally inherited through a dying man's final, calculated wish.

Elena walked in, placing a fresh cup of tea on the desk next to a classic wooden Scrabble board.

"The meeting with the eastern syndicate leaders is set for tomorrow evening," Elena said, her expression carrying a hint of lingering respect. "They’ve agreed to terms. They won't cross us."

"Good," I replied, looking down at the wooden tiles on the board. I picked up a small tile bearing the letter V, turning it over in my fingers.

People thought Carl had trapped me by making me his wife. They thought he had chained me to a world of violence, crime, and constant danger. But looking back at the frail, dying man who asked me to marry him in his living room while I wore a simple white T-shirt, I finally understood the truth.

He hadn't trapped me in a cage. He had handed me the keys to the world, freeing me from a lifetime of powerlessness and hiding.

"Are you ever going back to the hospice?" Elena asked gently, breaking the silence.

May you like

I smiled, setting the wooden tile down in the center of the board.

"No," I said softly. "I'm done nursing the dying. It's time to rule the living."
