Chapter 1 - The Midnight FreezeThe phone click echoed through the icy silence of the driveway. I tucked it back into my coat pocket, staring up at the amber light glowing from the second-story window of the master bedroom. That room—and every square inch of the sprawling estate beneath it—was entirely mine.

Graham stood in the doorway, his arms crossed, a sneer plastered across his face. “Still playing on your toy phone, Evelyn? Go ahead, call your little freelance friends. See if anyone cares about a broke mother freezing on a Tuesday night.”

“I’m done playing, Graham,” I whispered into the wind.

I turned my back on them, shifting the twins securely in my arms, and walked down the heated marble steps—which hadn’t been turned on, because the utility bills were routed through a corporate shell account under my direct supervision. The motion sensors didn't even click on for him; they recognized my encrypted Bluetooth token instead.

As I reached the wrought-iron gates at the end of the long driveway, a sleek, matte-black Maybach silently glided out of the shadows, its headlights cutting through the swirling snow. The rear door clicked open instantly, and Marcus Vance, my executive senior counsel, stepped out wearing a bespoke charcoal suit despite the bitter cold. He held a large wool blanket, his eyes blazing with restrained fury.

“Ms. Vale,” Marcus said, his voice trembling slightly as he gently draped the blanket over the twins. “I am profoundly sorry you and your children were subjected to this.”

“Save the apologies for the courtroom, Marcus,” I said, sliding into the leather-lined interior of the car. The warmth hit my face like a wave, melting the numbness in my fingers. “Is it done?”

“The emergency asset freeze across all personal, joint, and corporate accounts tied to Graham Harrington and Vivian Harrington took effect forty-five seconds ago,” Marcus replied, climbing into the front passenger seat and opening a heavy leather briefcase. “Furthermore, the primary commercial mortgages on Harrington Manor and their vacation chalet in Aspen have been called in. Full principal due immediately. No grace period.”

I looked down at my sleeping sons. Their breathing was steady, peaceful, completely unaware that their father had just signed his own financial death warrant.

“And Harrington Luxe?” I asked.

Marcus turned around, a sharp, cold smile cutting across his face. “We initiated an immediate internal audit for gross corporate misconduct, embezzlement, and executive malfeasance. The system automatically locked Graham out of his terminal, froze his corporate credit cards, and revoked his company vehicle access. By the time he wakes up tomorrow, he won't even be able to buy a cup of coffee with company funds.”

“Good,” I murmured, leaning back against the plush headrest. “Let them sleep tonight. Tomorrow, we pull the rug completely.”
