Chapter 1 - The Second House and the Shadow NameThe phone line crackled slightly as my attorney, Julian, delivered the name that fractured whatever fragile remnants of my marriage remained.

"The second house," Julian said, his voice measured and professional, "is located in the gated enclave of Preston Hollow. And the deed is registered entirely under the name of Vanessa Cruz."

The breath left my lungs. Vanessa.

Vanessa Cruz was not a stranger. She was Mauricio’s twenty-six-year-old executive assistant at the firm where he supposedly worked seventy-hour weeks. For over a year, Mauricio had used late nights, emergency board meetings, and weekend strategy sessions as alibis. All the while, he had been using a stolen half-million-dollar loan—secured by forging my signature on a house owned by my private real-estate company—to buy a luxury nest for his mistress.

In the back seat of the taxi, Sofia and Camila were quietly humming along to a song on the radio, entirely unaware that the foundation of our lives had just violently caved in.

"Valeria? Are you still there?" Julian asked, concern bleeding into his tone.

"I’m here," I whispered, gripping my phone so tightly my knuckles turned white. "Julian, can we freeze the loan immediately? Can we move against the Preston Hollow property tonight?"

"The loan was disbursed months ago, and the mortgage company holds a valid-looking lien because of the notarized quitclaim deed," Julian explained grimly. "However, because the deed itself is fraudulent and we have proof of the forgery—thanks to Elvira signing as a witness—we have grounds for immediate criminal charges. Mortgage fraud, forgery, and grand larceny. Both Mauricio and Elvira are looking at federal time."

Federal time.

My mother-in-law, who had spent the evening lording over her seventy-thousand-dollar party and humiliating my daughters over a cracked plate, had signed her name to a felony document just to help her golden-boy son play the big shot and maintain a secret life.

"Don't do anything yet, Julian," I said, a cold, sharp clarity washing over me. "Let them sweat at the event hall. Let the venue manager lock down the doors. I want them to experience what it feels like to have nothing, to be trapped by their own arrogance, before the hammer drops."

"Understood," Julian replied. "What are your instructions for tomorrow morning?"

"Prepare all the filings. We are demolishing every single lie they've built, starting with the house they live in."
