Chapter 3 - The Midnight VisitorAt 2:15 AM, a soft knock echoed at the door of our hotel suite.

I was sitting at the mahogany desk by the window, reviewing corporate financial audits and asset transfer documents with the aid of a secure tablet. Sofia and Camila were fast asleep in the adjoining bedroom, breathing softly and securely.

Quietly, I walked to the door and checked the peephole.

It wasn't hotel security. It was Mauricio.

His suit jacket was gone, his tie was ripped open, and his hair was wildly disheveled. He looked ten years older than he had hours ago. He knocked again, harder this time, frantic and breathless.

I unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door open just wide enough to block his entry.

"Valeria," he breathed, his eyes bloodshot and desperate. He tried to push past me, but I planted my feet firmly in the doorway. "Thank God. You have no idea what kind of hell I've been through tonight. The police... the venue owners... they threatened to arrest my father and me. We had to sign promissory notes at three in the morning just to walk out of there."

"Good," I said evenly. "It builds character."

Mauricio stared at me, blinking as if he couldn't comprehend the icy composure in my voice. The submissive, quiet wife who had absorbed his family's daily abuse for ten years was entirely gone.

"What are you talking about?" he stammered, his voice cracking. "Valeria, we need to talk. Elvira is beside herself. Look, I know I haven't been... I know I've made mistakes. But we are a family. You can't just abandon me like that in front of everyone."

"You abandoned our daughters when your mother handed them a cracked plate and told them they didn't belong," I replied, my voice dropping an octave, steady and sharp as glass. "You stood there and smiled while your family degraded the flesh and blood of our home. That was your choice, Mauricio. And tonight, you paid for it."

"It was a joke! Elvira didn't mean—"

"Quiet," I commanded, holding up a single finger.

The raw authority in my tone caught him entirely off guard. He flinched.

"You think this was just about a party?" I continued, stepping closer so he was forced to look directly into my eyes. "You think you can forge my signature, steal half a million dollars against my real estate, buy a house for your mistress Vanessa Cruz, and still walk back into my life like an entitled prince?"

The color drained instantly from Mauricio’s face. His jaw went slack.

"How... how do you..."

"Julian called me," I said smoothly. "So did the county recorder's office. And by the way, Mauricio, your mistress's name is very easy to trace when you're stupid enough to use corporate matching funds to buy her designer handbags."

Mauricio staggered back a half-step, clutching the doorframe. "Valeria, listen to me. Vanessa... that was a business investment. She’s helping me expand the firm—"

"She’s helping you empty your bank accounts before the federal indictments drop," I interrupted. "Tomorrow morning, the divorce papers go out. Simultaneously, the criminal referral for mortgage fraud and forgery will land on the Dallas County District Attorney’s desk. And as for your parents' house..."

I paused, letting the weight of the next words crush whatever hope he had left.

"My company owns it. We bought it out of foreclosure three years ago. And at 9:00 AM, my legal team is serving them an eviction notice for breach of contract and unauthorized secondary liens."
