Chapter 5 - The Corporate Trap Closes"You can't do this!" Mauricio screamed across the lawn, abandoning all pretense of dignity as neighbors began peeking through their blinds to watch the spectacle. "Valeria! Get out of that car right now! We are husband and wife! Everything you have is community property!"

I stepped out of the SUV, the heels of my designer boots clicking sharply against the concrete driveway. I adjusted my sunglasses, walking slowly toward them like a prosecutor stepping up to the witness stand.

"Community property, Mauricio?" I asked, my voice carrying clearly across the quiet morning air. "Is that what you call a forged quitclaim deed? Is that what you call a four-hundred-and-eighty-thousand-dollar fraudulent loan taken out without my knowledge?"

Elvira’s face turned the color of ash. She turned to her son, her eyes wide with sudden terror. "What... what is she talking about, Mauricio? What loan?"

Mauricio froze, unable to meet his mother's gaze. The silence was all the confirmation Elvira needed.

"You idiot!" Elvira shrieked, lunging forward and slapping Mauricio hard across the face. The sharp thwack echoed across the front lawn. "You ruined us! You actually ruined us!"

"Mom, stop it!" Mauricio yelled, holding his cheek. "I was trying to secure our future! I needed capital to invest—"

"You needed to fund your mistress's lifestyle in Preston Hollow," I finished for him, pulling a folded stack of printed documents from my portfolio folder. "I have the bank statements, Mauricio. I have the wire transfers to Vanessa Cruz. And more importantly, I have the forensic handwriting report confirming that Elvira’s signature as a witness on the fraudulent deed matches her signature from the venue contract."

Rogelio stumbled out onto the porch, grabbing the wooden railing for support, his voice trembling. "Elvira... what did you do? Did you sign something illegal?"

"Rogelio, don't listen to her, she's lying—" Elvira stammered, backing away.

"The District Attorney's office doesn't think so," I said, checking my wristwatch calmly. "Federal agents are already at Mauricio's office executing a search warrant. By noon, both of you will have official criminal charges for bank fraud, identity theft, and conspiracy."

For the first time in ten years, Elvira dropped to her knees on the porch floor, letting out a wail of absolute despair. The queen of arrogance had been dethroned by the very daughter-in-law she had mocked over a cracked plate less than twenty-four hours ago.
