Chapter 6 - The Fallout at the FirmWhile Mauricio and his parents dissolved into panic on the suburban lawn, the corporate world was experiencing an earthquake of its own.

Apex Holdings and its subsidiaries managed over fifty commercial properties across Texas, including the very high-rise downtown where Mauricio worked as a mid-level vice president of acquisitions. Unknown to him—because I had deliberately kept my professional life separate to avoid workplace conflicts of interest—Apex Holdings was one of the primary financial backers of Mauricio’s employer, Sterling & Vance Capital.
By 11:00 AM, the senior partners of Sterling & Vance received an urgent notification from my chief legal counsel.
The notification included two things:
Proof of active federal mortgage fraud investigations involving Mauricio Santos.
Notice that Apex Holdings was immediately withdrawing its twenty-million-dollar capital investment line from Sterling & Vance unless Mauricio Santos was terminated with cause before noon.
The response from the executive board was swift and merciless.
By 11:45 AM, Mauricio was escorted out of the glass-walled downtown skyscraper by building security. His corporate keycard was deactivated before he even reached the elevators. His company laptop, packed with months of internal communications and illicit expense reports linked to Vanessa Cruz, was confiscated on the spot.
My phone rang while I was sitting in my corner office on the forty-second floor of the Apex Tower, looking out over the panoramic skyline of Dallas.
It was Mauricio. His voice was no longer arrogant or demanding. It was broken, ragged, and terrified.
"Valeria... please," he wept openly over the phone. "They fired me. Security just threw me out onto the street. They took my laptop, my phone, everything. Vanessa is not answering her calls; her lawyer already locked her out of the Preston Hollow house. I have nothing left."
I took a slow sip of my green tea, looking down at the miniature toy cars moving along the highway far below.
"You had everything, Mauricio," I said softly. "You had a wife who loved you, children who adored you, and a family that lived in comfort. You traded all of that for vanity, greed, and a mistress."
"We can fix this! We can go to counseling! We can tell the DA it was a misunderstanding!" he begged, his voice cracking into a pathetic sob.
"There's nothing to fix," I replied. "The divorce petition was filed ten minutes ago. My attorneys are seizing your personal assets to offset the legal fees and damages from the fraudulent loan. You are legally, professionally, and financially finished."

"You're a monster," he whispered bitterly.
"No, Mauricio," I answered calmly. "I'm just the bill collector."
