Chapter 4 - The Eviction Notice at DawnBy 9:30 AM the next day, the sun was shining brightly over the quiet, manicured lawns of suburban Dallas, completely unaware of the explosive storm about to touch down at Elvira and Rogelio’s doorstep.

I sat in the passenger seat of my black Mercedes SUV while my corporate head of security, a towering former federal marshal named Marcus, walked up to the front door of the house where Mauricio’s parents lived.
Sofia and Camila were at a private arts camp downtown, guarded by two trusted personal protection agents. I had ensured my daughters were completely insulated from the impending fallout.
Marcus pressed the doorbell twice, then firmly knocked.
A moment later, the front door swung open. Elvira stood there, wearing a silk bathrobe, her face puffy and exhausted from a night of crying and panic over the party debt. When she saw Marcus, her expression shifted from annoyance to immediate suspicion.
"Can I help you?" Elvira snapped, crossing her arms. "If this is about the party catering bill, talk to my son—"
"Mrs. Santos," Marcus interrupted in a deep, booming voice, handing her a thick manila envelope. "You are being served with a formal Notice to Quit and Vacate Premises, effective immediately, on behalf of Apex Holdings LLC."
Elvira blinked, staring at the envelope as if it were a foreign object. "Apex... Apex Holdings? What is this nonsense? My son owns this house! Mauricio bought this house for us to save us from foreclosure!"
"Your son owns nothing, madam," Marcus said flatly. "Apex Holdings is owned entirely by Valeria Santos. You have forty-eight hours to remove your personal belongings before the locks are changed and a sheriff's eviction is executed."
Inside the house, Rogelio appeared in the hallway, shuffling forward in his slippers. "Elvira, what's going on? Who is at the door?"
Before Elvira could answer, a sleek silver sedan pulled into the driveway. It was Mauricio, his eyes wild, his clothing rumpled from sleeping in his car. He leaped out of the vehicle and sprinted across the lawn.
"Marcus! Stop! Get away from my mother!" Mauricio roared, charging up the steps.
Marcus didn't even flinch. He simply shifted his weight, and with the practiced ease of a trained operator, blocked Mauricio from getting within three feet of the door.
"Mauricio!" Elvira shrieked, clutching her chest dramatically. "This man is saying we’re being evicted! He’s saying Valeria owns the house! Tell him he’s lying! Tell him you own it!"
Mauricio looked past Marcus, his gaze locking onto mine through the open window of the SUV. He saw me sitting there in my tailored blazer, wearing dark sunglasses, calmly holding a cup of artisan coffee.

The terrifying truth finally settled in his bones.
He hadn't married a dependent office administrator. He had married the sole owner and CEO of a multi-million-dollar real estate portfolio—a woman who had kept her professional identity hidden simply to protect her marriage, a protection he had utterly squandered.
