CHAPTER 5 — The Bloodiest Escape Attempt in Prison History

Gunfire echoed across the prison yard.

Federal agents immediately pushed inmates to the ground.

Correctional officers rushed prisoners back toward their cells.

Chaos consumed Blackridge Prison.

The attackers moved with frightening discipline.

No shouting.

No panic.

Every step had been planned months in advance.

Three teams.

Three objectives.

Disable communications.

Destroy surveillance.

Extract Marcus.

Kate sprinted toward the control building.

One agent shouted after her.

"Lawson! Wait for backup!"

She didn't.

She already knew waiting would cost lives.

Inside the east corridor...

Two attackers emerged from the smoke.

Automatic rifles raised.

Neither had time to fire.

Kate disarmed the first with a lightning-fast wrist lock.

The second lunged with a combat knife.

She ducked beneath the blade.

One elbow.

One kick.

One controlled strike.

Both men collapsed unconscious.

A young FBI agent stared in disbelief.

"Who... who trained you?"

Kate answered without slowing down.

"People who are no longer alive."

Meanwhile...

Marcus had nearly reached the transport tunnel beneath the prison.

Two masked soldiers unlocked his chains.

"Move!"

They shoved him toward an armored van waiting outside.

Marcus laughed.

"I knew he'd never abandon me."

Then...

A single voice echoed through the tunnel.

"Take one more step."

Everyone froze.

Kate stood alone at the tunnel entrance.

Covered in dust.

Holding nothing but a collapsible baton.

The soldiers laughed.

"There are eight of us."

Kate calmly replied,

"I only need one of you conscious."

The fight that followed lasted less than two minutes.

The tunnel became a blur of movement.

Weapons clattered across the concrete.

One attacker crashed into the wall.

Another dropped after a perfectly timed knee strike.

Three more tried surrounding her.

She forced them into each other.

When the smoke finally cleared...

Seven elite mercenaries lay unconscious.

Only one remained standing.

Marcus.

His smile had disappeared.

"You..."

"...you're even better than the rumors."

Kate slowly walked toward him.

"No."

"The rumors were exaggerated."

Marcus reached inside his jacket.

Kate instantly prepared to strike.

Instead...

He pulled out another photograph.

This one showed a little girl.

About eight years old.

Standing beside Kate.

Kate froze.

Marcus quietly spoke.

"Still think you've already lost everyone?"

Kate stared at the picture.

Her face remained calm.

May you like

But inside...

The world she had buried years ago was beginning to crack apart.
