CHAPTER 8 — The Man No One Had Ever Seen Removed His Mask

Smoke filled the hallway.

Armed men entered the safe house with flawless coordination.

Kate moved Emily behind a reinforced wall.

"Stay here."

Emily grabbed her wrist.

"You can't stop him."

Kate looked directly into her eyes.

"I don't have to stop him."

"I only have to keep you alive."

The first attacker rushed through the doorway.

Kate disarmed him instantly.

A second followed.

Then a third.

Within seconds, the hallway became a battlefield.

Broken glass covered the floor.

Spent shell casings rolled across the tiles.

Federal agents fought room by room.

But the attackers kept advancing.

Then...

Everything stopped.

One man walked slowly through the smoke.

No weapon in his hands.

No body armor.

Only a black suit.

And a silver mask covering the upper half of his face.

Every mercenary stepped aside as he approached.

Kate immediately understood.

This wasn't another soldier.

This was the leader.

"The Ghost."

He stopped only a few meters away.

His voice was calm.

"Hello, Kate."

Kate stared at him.

"We've been looking for each other for twelve years."

The masked man smiled faintly.

"And yet..."

"You never realized we had already met."

He slowly removed the silver mask.

Emily gasped.

Kate's eyes widened.

Standing before them was Director William Hayes—

the respected federal official who had supervised Operation Black Falcon from the beginning.

The very man who had congratulated Kate after every mission.

The man everyone trusted.

The man who had publicly declared Black Falcon destroyed.

Kate whispered,

"It was you..."

Hayes nodded.

"I created Black Falcon."

"I also created the task force that hunted it."

Emily stepped backward in horror.

"You raised me..."

Hayes looked at her almost like a father.

"I prepared you."

"One day this organization needed a new leader."

Kate clenched her fists.

"You murdered your own agents."

Hayes answered without emotion.

"They became liabilities."

Outside, helicopters circled overhead.

Federal reinforcements were finally arriving.

Hayes glanced toward the ceiling.

"Our time is up."

He looked at Emily one last time.

"You still belong to me."

Then he disappeared into the smoke before anyone could stop him.

For the first time...

May you like

Kate knew exactly who the enemy was.

And he was sitting at the highest levels of the government.
