CHAPTER 4 — "The Enemy Was Never the Prisoners"

David fought with calm precision.
Every movement was controlled.
He avoided unnecessary injuries, disarmed attackers, and protected the unconscious guards lying on the concrete floor.
Yet something felt wrong.
Too organized.
The inmates weren't acting like an angry mob.
They were following orders.
David noticed one prisoner repeatedly shouting directions.
"Block the east hallway!"
"Leave the surveillance room alone!"
"Don't touch Cell Block A!"
Why protect one section of the prison during a riot?
It made no sense.
Meanwhile...
Victor watched everything from the upper walkway.
His followers waited impatiently.
"Boss!"
"This is our chance!"
"We finish the guard now!"
Victor looked toward David.
The man who had every reason to hate him...
Was dragging an injured officer to safety instead of saving himself.
Another inmate charged David with a steel pipe.
Without hesitation, Victor jumped over the railing.
Everyone froze.
He landed directly between the attacker and David.
CRACK!
The pipe slammed into Victor's shoulder instead.
The attacker stumbled backward in shock.
"What are you doing, Victor?"
Even David looked surprised.
Victor didn't answer.
He simply punched the attacker once, sending him crashing into the wall.
His gang stared in disbelief.
Their feared leader...
Had just protected the guard.
"Nobody kills him," Victor growled.
"If anyone's settling scores with David Walker..."
"It'll be me."
The words sounded threatening...
But David saw something different.
Victor wasn't protecting his pride anymore.
He was protecting the only honest man he'd ever met inside Blackridge.
Suddenly the emergency lights shut off.
The prison fell into darkness.
Only the flashing backup alarms illuminated the corridors.
A gunshot echoed through the building.
Then another.
Prisoners stopped fighting.
Guards stopped moving.
Everyone looked toward the administration wing.
David's face changed instantly.
"Those weren't warning shots."
Victor narrowed his eyes.
"Someone's using live ammunition."
At that exact moment, a terrified young correctional officer ran into the corridor, covered in blood.
"They're killing people!"
"It isn't the inmates!"
"It's..."
Before he could finish...
A sniper's bullet shattered the window behind him.
The officer collapsed.
Dead.
The entire prison stood frozen.
David slowly looked toward Deputy Warden Richard Hale's office.
The blinds moved.
Someone had been watching the entire time.
Victor whispered one sentence that changed everything.
"This riot..."
"...was never meant for us."
May you like
For the first time in Blackridge history...
The most feared prisoner and the prison's newest guard realized they had the same enemy.
