CHAPTER 9 — "The Man Everyone Thought Was Dead Walked Into the Courtroom"

Three months later...

Blackridge Prison stood empty.

The underground prison had been sealed by federal authorities, while investigators uncovered thousands of classified documents exposing decades of corruption.

Deputy Warden Richard Hale was officially declared dead after the collapse.

His criminal network had fallen.

Or so everyone believed.

Across the country, every major news station broadcast the same trial.

Former prison officials...

Corrupt politicians...

Contractors...

Mercenaries...

All stood before a federal judge, accused of operating one of the darkest prison conspiracies in American history.

The courtroom overflowed with reporters.

Families of missing inmates clutched faded photographs, hoping for answers they had waited years to hear.

David Walker sat quietly in the front row.

In his pocket rested Victor Carter's dented prison ID tag.

The prosecutors had one final witness.

But the witness never arrived.

Minutes passed.

The judge was preparing to postpone the hearing when the courtroom doors slowly opened.

Everyone turned.

A tall man walked inside wearing a dark suit.

His hair was shorter.

His beard had been shaved.

A long scar crossed one side of his face.

For several seconds...

No one recognized him.

Then David stood.

"...Victor?"

Gasps echoed through the courtroom.

The reporters nearly dropped their cameras.

Victor Carter...

The man officially listed as dead...

Had just walked into federal court.

Federal marshals instinctively surrounded him.

Victor slowly raised both hands.

"I'm not here to run."

"I'm here to finish this."

He carried a battered metal case recovered from beneath the collapsed underground prison.

Inside were hard drives...

Financial ledgers...

Hidden surveillance recordings...

And one final video.

The courtroom lights dimmed as the footage began to play.

Richard Hale appeared on screen, calmly signing documents while wealthy businessmen discussed payments for making inmates "disappear."

One voice said,

"Dead men never testify."

Another replied,

"Then make sure they're officially buried."

The room fell silent.

Victims' families broke into tears.

Jurors stared in disbelief.

Every lie told over the past twenty years collapsed in a single afternoon.

The judge looked toward Victor.

"Mr. Carter..."

"You understand your testimony may change everything?"

Victor nodded.

"For the first time in my life..."

"I'm telling the truth."

But before he could continue—

A loud crack echoed outside.

The courtroom windows exploded inward.

Glass flew everywhere.

Masked gunmen stormed into the building.

One shouted,

"Kill Carter!"

May you like

The conspiracy wasn't over.

Someone powerful still wanted Victor silenced forever.
