Chapter 1 - The Ultrasound Room of Delusions

The private waiting room of the Saint Jude Elite Prenatal Clinic smelled faintly of expensive jasmine and cold ambition. Adrian Castillo slung his designer coat over the plush velvet armrest, checking his luxury wristwatch for the third time in two minutes.

"She's running five minutes late," Adrian muttered, tapping his polished leather shoe against the imported Italian tile. "Chloe said Dr. Reynolds is very strict about appointments."

"Relax, little brother," Vanessa said, smoothing down her designer blazer as she settled into the adjacent seat. "Chloe is carrying the future of the Castillo name. Dr. Reynolds will wait. Everyone waits for a Castillo heir."

Margaret, their mother, sat upright with her hands folded over her vintage Chanel handbag. Her face was a mask of cold, unyielding satisfaction. For ten years, Margaret had resented Elena. Not because Elena was a bad wife—she had been a model of grace, managing the household, raising Noah and Lily, and standing by Adrian while he built his boutique real estate firm—but because Elena had given birth to a daughter first, and a son who, in Margaret’s elitist eyes, was "too gentle" to lead.

"Elena is gone, and the dead weight is out of the country," Margaret said, her voice dropping into a register of frosty triumph. "Now, Adrian can finally build a legacy worthy of our bloodline. No more compromises. No more middle-class sentimentality."

The frosted glass door swung open, and a nurse in crisp white scrubs smiled professionally.

"Mr. Castillo? Your party may enter. Dr. Reynolds is ready for you."

Chloe Vanderbilt was already lying on the examination table, her designer silk robe pulled back to expose her flat stomach. At four months pregnant, the small swell was barely visible, but Chloe stroked it with theatrical tenderness, her eyes shining with practiced tears of joy.

"Adrian," she whispered, extending a manicured hand. "I was so nervous waiting for you. Did everything go smoothly with the paperwork?"

"Better than smoothly, my love," Adrian said, leaning down to press a warm kiss against her lips, completely ignoring the lingering metallic taste of his hasty signature at the lawyer's office. "Elena signed away everything just to get out of my hair. She didn't even ask for alimony. She took the kids and ran off to Europe like a beggar. We are completely, finally free."

Chloe’s eyes flashed with a triumphant gleam that she quickly masked behind a flutter of long eyelashes. "Oh, Adrian... I knew she was foolish, but giving up all rights? That just proves how little she mattered."

Dr. Kenneth Reynolds, a man with silvering temples and decades of elite reputation, stood beside the ultrasound monitor. His expression was completely neutral—a mask of professional detachment that seasoned doctors wear when delivering either miracles or devastation.

"Mr. and Mrs. Castillo—or prospective Mr. and Mrs. Castillo," Dr. Reynolds corrected himself smoothly, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses. "Let's take a look at the development of our little heir, shall we?"

Adrian beamed, wrapping his arm around Chloe’s shoulders. Vanessa pulled out her phone, ready to record a live update for her exclusive social media circle. Margaret leaned forward, her eyes locked on the monochrome screen as the gel was applied to Chloe's abdomen.

The transducer slid across Chloe's skin, and the rhythmic, rapid whoosh-whoosh of a heartbeat filled the sterile room.

"There's the heartbeat," Dr. Reynolds said evenly. "Strong, steady. 145 beats per minute."

"Magnificent," Margaret breathed, closing her eyes in pseudo-spiritual reverence. "Listen to that strength. That is the sound of a Castillo ruling the market."

Dr. Reynolds did not smile. Instead, his fingers tapped a sequence on the keyboard, freezing a frame on the monitor. He zoomed in on a specific cluster of tissue near the developing spinal column, his brow furrowing just slightly—a micro-expression that only someone watching him closely would notice.

"Doctor?" Chloe asked, her voice losing a fraction of its honeyed sweetness. "Is something wrong with the baby's posture?"

"Not the posture, Ms. Vanderbilt," Dr. Reynolds said slowly. He turned his chair away from the monitor to face the family directly. His eyes bypassed Adrian and landed squarely on Margaret, carrying a weight that instantly lowered the temperature in the room.

"Doctor Reynolds," Adrian chuckled nervously, waving a hand. "If you're going to tell us it's a boy, just say it. We have a champagne reservation at Le Cirque."

Dr. Reynolds clasped his hands together over his chart.

"Mr. Castillo, before we discuss the gender or any celebratory reservations, standard protocol for high-risk prenatal profiling at this clinic requires a comprehensive genetic viability panel—especially when dealing with complex lineage markers and donor-matched embryonic implants."

The room went dead silent.

Vanessa lowered her phone. Margaret’s smile froze into a brittle line.

"Donor-matched?" Adrian repeated, his laugh dying in his throat. "What are you talking about, doctor? Chloe conceived naturally. We've been together for over a year."

Dr. Reynolds looked up, his gaze piercing and absolute.

"Mr. Castillo, according to the genetic sequencing data retrieved from our laboratory database, this fetus was not conceived naturally. Furthermore, its chromosomal markers do not match yours in any capacity. In fact, due to a severe hereditary hematological anomaly carried exclusively by the maternal DNA donor—an anomaly that matches Ms. Vanderbilt's exact medical file—this child possesses a genetic condition that makes it scientifically impossible for you to be the biological father."

Chloe went entirely white, her breath catching in her throat.

Adrian stood frozen, the color draining from his face as the words echoed in the small, clinical room. "What... what did you just say?"
