Chapter 8 - The Echoes of Yesterday

Far across the Atlantic, beneath the gray, unyielding drizzle of a rainy New York afternoon, a man in a worn, oversized trench coat stood across the street from the towering glass skyscraper that once bore his family name.
The lobby entrance no longer read Castillo Holdings. In bold, luminous titanium letters, the glass facade gleamed with a new identity: SALAZAR INTERNATIONAL.
Adrian Castillo pulled his coat tighter around his shivering frame, his breath pluming in the cold air. His hands were calloused from months of manual labor at a low-wage warehouse job—the only place that would hire a man with a shattered credit score and a public scandal attached to his name.
He watched as sleek luxury cars pulled up to the entrance, disgorging high-powered executives and confident business leaders dressed in immaculate Italian wool.
And then, on the massive digital billboard above the revolving doors, a live financial broadcast flickered to life.
A crystal-clear image of Elena Salazar appeared on the screen, speaking at an international economic forum in Geneva. She looked breathtaking, her expression one of supreme confidence, intelligence, and grace. The chyron beneath her name read: ELENA SALAZAR: CEO OF SALAZAR INTERNATIONAL NAMED GLOBAL PHILANTHROPIST OF THE YEAR.
Passersby stopped to look at the screen, murmuring words of admiration.
Adrian stepped back into the shadows of a concrete pillar, his chest tightening with a suffocating wave of unbearable regret. He remembered the exact moment he stood in the attorney's office five years ago, calling his children "dead weight" while rushing off to chase a hollow illusion of pride and a false heir.

He had traded an empire for dust, and a queen for a mirage.
A sharp gust of wind swept down the Manhattan canyon, biting through his thin coat. Adrian turned his collar up, lowered his head, and shuffled away into the anonymous, gray crowd—a ghost wandering through a world he had once believed he ruled, completely forgotten by the woman he had tried to destroy, and forever defined by the legacy he threw away.
