Chapter 2 - The Trap Springs in Barcelona

The private Gulfstream jet touched down at Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport with a gentle, floating hum. As the cabin door hissed open, a warm Mediterranean breeze swept inside, carrying the scent of salt, citrus, and absolute freedom.

Elena Salazar stood at the top of the exit stairs, sunglasses shielding her eyes from the brilliant Spanish sun. Noah, seven, clutched his worn dinosaur backpack in one hand and held his mother's fingers tightly with the other. Lily, five, looked around wide-eyed, pointing at the palm trees lining the distant horizon.

"Mommy, are we really living here now?" Lily asked, her voice full of childish wonder.

"Yes, my love," Elena said, kneeling down to adjust the collar of Lily's pink cardigan. "We are home."

A sleek black Mercedes-Maybach was parked on the tarmac, arranged by Attorney Dawson. A chauffeur in a crisp suit stepped out, holding a tablet with ELENA SALAZAR & FAMILY written in elegant calligraphy.

"Mrs. Salazar, welcome to Barcelona," the driver said, bowing politely as he took their carry-on luggage. "Your penthouse at Passeig de Gràcia is fully prepared. Attorney Dawson sends his regards and has requested a secured video briefing at your convenience."

As they glided through the vibrant, sun-drenched streets of Barcelona, Elena looked out the window. For ten years, she had believed her world was defined by the walls of Adrian’s suburban mansion, by his mother's scathing remarks, and by the suffocating silence of an unfaithful marriage. She had spent countless nights crying into her pillow while Adrian worked late "closing deals"—deals that turned out to be trysts funded by her own family savings.

When Elena first discovered the hidden financial documents six months ago—thanks to a private investigator recommended by her brilliant childhood friend, now a high-powered international litigator named Marcus Dawson—she hadn't yelled. She hadn't thrown plates.

She had plotted.

Marcus had uncovered the staggering truth: Adrian’s real estate firm, Castillo Holdings, was built entirely on a leveraged loan backed by Elena’s maternal inheritance—an inheritance Adrian had tricked her into signing over under the guise of "corporate tax restructuring." Moreover, Adrian had legally designated his entire personal estate to his "future bloodline," completely unaware that the legal definition of his signature on the divorce settlement included an ironclad forfeiture clause drafted by Marcus.

Because Adrian had signed the papers without reading them—in his rabid haste to run to Chloe—he had unwittingly transferred 100% of his voting shares in Castillo Holdings back to Elena as part of the "uncontested asset waiver." He thought he was giving up "dead weight" apartments and furniture.

In reality, he had just signed away his empire.

Inside the sprawling penthouse overlooking the modernist architecture of Antoni Gaudí, Noah ran toward the floor-to-ceiling windows. "Look at the big church, Mom! It looks like a sandcastle!"

"That's the Sagrada Família, buddy," Elena smiled, setting her handbag down on a marble countertop.

Her phone buzzed violently on the kitchen island. It was an encrypted FaceTime call from Marcus Dawson.

Elena swiped to answer. Marcus’s sharp, handsome face appeared on screen, a smug grin plastered across his features.

"Elena! How was the flight? Did the kids enjoy the takeoff?"

"We landed safely, Marcus," Elena said, pouring herself a glass of sparkling water. "The penthouse is breathtaking. But tell me... did the package reach Saint Jude Clinic on schedule?"

Marcus chuckled, a low, rich sound of pure satisfaction.

"Right on schedule. Dr. Reynolds received the complete forensic financial and medical dossier thirty minutes before Adrian and his little entourage walked through the door. Chloe’s entire game plan is burning to ashes as we speak."

Elena took a slow sip of her water, her eyes reflecting the bright Barcelona skyline. "And Adrian?"

"Right now," Marcus said, his smile turning razor-sharp, "Adrian Castillo is realizing that the 'heir' he's been celebrating isn't his, that his company now belongs to his ex-wife, and that his family name is about to become the biggest punchline in the financial world. Enjoy the view, Elena. The real show is just beginning."
