Chapter 7 - A New Horizon in Barcelona

Five years later.

The Mediterranean sun cast a golden glow across the expansive gardens of a historic cliffside estate overlooking the Costa Brava. The scent of blooming lavender and sea salt drifted on the warm afternoon breeze.

Elena Salazar stood on the stone veranda, wearing an elegant emerald-green silk dress, watching two teenagers run across the pristine lawn.

Noah, now twelve, was teaching his younger sister Lily, ten, how to construct a complex wooden model sailboat—the exact kind of project their father had never once had the patience to share with them. But Noah didn't lack for masculine guidance; Marcus Dawson, now not only her trusted legal partner but her steadfast companion in life, stood nearby, holding two glasses of fresh lemonade and laughing as Noah proudly explained his aerodynamic modifications.

Elena took a deep breath, feeling the absolute stillness of joy in her chest.

Her company, Salazar International Real Estate, was now a multi-billion-dollar enterprise known globally not just for luxury developments, but for ethical business practices, affordable housing initiatives, and female leadership mentorship programs—a passion project Elena had founded to uplift women who, like her past self, had been told they had no voice.

A soft knock sounded at the veranda archway.

Her executive assistant, a bright young woman named Clara, stepped onto the terrace with a leather portfolio.

"Mrs. Salazar, the morning acquisition briefs from the London and New York branches have arrived. Everything has cleared audit."

Elena smiled, taking the portfolio. "Thank you, Clara. Put them on the study desk. I’ll review them after lunch."

Clara hesitated for a moment, shifting her weight from one foot to the other. "There was one other piece of correspondence, Elena. Standard legal notification from a bankruptcy court in New York."

Elena paused, raising an eyebrow. "Go on."

"It's regarding Adrian Castillo," Clara said quietly. "His former holding entity has been officially dissolved. He petitioned the court for a hardship review, but it was summarily dismissed due to unresolved tax fraud liabilities originating from his partnership with Julian Vance."

Elena looked out across the sparkling blue expanse of the Mediterranean Sea. She felt no spike of triumph, no lingering bitterness, and no desire for revenge. The past was not just a closed chapter; it was a burnt-out book whose ashes had long since scattered in the wind.

"Thank you for letting me know, Clara," Elena said evenly. "File it under archived closed cases."

"Understood," Clara nodded, turning to leave the terrace.

Marcus walked over, handing her a glass of lemonade and wrapping a warm arm around her waist. He followed her gaze out toward the horizon where Noah and Lily were cheering as their sailboat caught the coastal wind.

"Thinking about the past?" Marcus asked softly, pressing a gentle kiss to her temple.

Elena leaned her head against his shoulder, smiling as she took a sip of the cool, refreshing drink.

"Not at all, Marcus," Elena replied, her voice steady and full of unshakeable light. "I was just admiring the view."
