Chapter 2 - The Audit of a LifetimeThe amber liquid pooled around Nathan’s polished leather shoes, but he didn't move. He stood frozen, his face instantly draining of every drop of color.

Arthur Whitmore walked down the center aisle, the crowd parting before him like water. He stopped three paces from Sabrina and Vivien, his hands clasped behind his back.

“Father,” Nathan choked out, his voice cracking as he stumbled forward from the bar. “What... what is the meaning of this? You shouldn't have come out tonight, we were just—'

“Shut your mouth, Nathan,” Arthur said quietly. His voice didn't rise, but the authority behind it made the crystal chandeliers overhead seem to vibrate.

Arthur turned his attention to Sabrina, who was visibly trembling now under the old man’s terrifying gaze. Then, slowly, Arthur reached out and tapped the massive emerald-cut ring resting on Vivien’s finger with his fingernail.

“Tell me, young woman,” Arthur asked Sabrina, his tone deceptively mild. “Where was this ring purchased?”

Sabrina swallowed hard, her mouth opening and closing as she tried to find her voice. “I... I don't... Nathan bought it. At Fifth Avenue... from an exclusive private jeweler—”

“A private jeweler,” Arthur repeated, a cold, humorless smile touching his lips. He looked back at Nathan, who looked as though he were about to be physically sick. “How fascinating. Because according to the forensic audit completed by my corporate compliance team forty-eight minutes ago, no private jeweler on Fifth Avenue sold that stone.”

Arthur pulled a folded financial statement from his breast pocket and let it drop onto the ivory-covered table, right beside the divorce papers.

“That diamond,” Arthur continued, his voice ringing across the silent ballroom, “was unmounted from the central vault of Whitmore Global’s corporate holding reserves. It was classified as a secure physical asset backing our international logistics liquidity line. An asset that required a dual-signature authorization from the board of directors to move.”

The silence in the room became absolute.

“You didn't buy her a ring with your money, Nathan,” Arthur said, taking a slow step toward his disgraced son-in-law. “You embezzled a corporate security asset worth four hundred and fifty thousand dollars, passed it off as a token of affection to your mistress, and expected my family to finance your little midlife crisis.”
