Chapter 1 - The Contract Signed in Cold LeatherThe rain came down harder against the tinted windows of Lorenzo Vescari’s Maybach, a steady, rhythmic thrumming that sounded remarkably like a ticking clock. Inside, the air smelled of fine Italian leather, cedarwood, and the lingering, metallic bite of rain.

Isabella stared at the man sitting beside her. Lorenzo Vescari. A name spoken in hushed, terrified whispers around kitchen tables in Chicago, a name her father—a thirty-year veteran of the CPD—had etched into her memory as a synonym for absolute danger. Lorenzo was not just a powerful man; he was the undisputed king of a syndicate that held the city’s political, financial, and underworld apparatuses in a vise grip.
And he had just asked her to marry him.
"You're out of your mind," Isabella breathed, her voice raspy from tears. Her shivering had slowed, replaced by the sheer absurdity of the moment. "I don't know you. You don't know me. You found me crying on a curb outside the man who destroyed my life."
Lorenzo didn't blink. His gray eyes were cool, analytical, like a grandmaster studying a chessboard after a decisive opening move.
"I know enough," Lorenzo replied, his voice low, measured, and entirely destitute of warm emotion. "I know your father was Frank Cruz. An honest cop. A rare, foolish thing in this town, but respectable. I know Daniel Vance used your father’s name to secure his first commercial real estate loan before ditching you for the Whitfield family's portfolio. And I know that as of twenty minutes ago, Daniel Vance and Camille Whitfield think they have erased you."
Isabella felt a sharp pang in her chest. He knew. Of course he knew. A man like Lorenzo Vescari didn't run into people by accident.
"Why?" she demanded, leaning forward, defiance flaring through her exhaustion. "What does a man like you gain from a broken woman in a ruined emerald dress?"
Lorenzo leaned back, resting his gloved hands on his knee. "The Vescari estate requires a public face. The board of my legitimate holdings—the shipping lines, the hotel chains—is demanding I settle down with a woman of unblemished reputation. Someone untainted by the syndicate, yet strong enough not to fold under scrutiny. The daughters of my associates are hungry for blood and power. You, Isabella, are hungry for justice. That makes you far more reliable."
He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a heavy, platinum ring set with a flawless black diamond. It caught the dim streetlights, glowing like an ember.
"A business arrangement," Lorenzo continued. "One year. You get absolute protection, infinite resources, and the platform to dismantle Daniel Vance and Camille Whitfield piece by piece. In return, you play the devoted wife of Lorenzo Vescari. You give me respectability; I give you the weapon you lack."
Isabella looked at the ring. She thought of Daniel’s smug smirk at the altar. She thought of Camille’s delicate, triumphant smile as she swept past her in champagne silk. She thought of six years of her life poured into a man who had treated her like an inconvenient piece of baggage the second a richer offer arrived.
If she walked away tonight, she would go back to her small, empty apartment. She would cry. She would heal, eventually, but Daniel and Camille would thrive on her silence. They would tell the world she was crazy, bitter, unstable.
A woman who makes a scene has already lost the fight. Her mother’s voice rang in her head again. But her mother had never met Lorenzo Vescari.
"No scenes," Isabella said, her voice dropping an octave, turning ice-cold. "If I do this, we don't just make them afraid. We annihilate them."
A faint, dangerous smirk touched the corner of Lorenzo’s lips. "I wouldn't offer anything less."

He took her right hand. His gloved fingers were firm, immovable. He slid the black diamond onto her finger. It fit perfectly.
"Welcome to the family, Isabella," Lorenzo murmured. "Now, let's go introduce the bride and groom to their new reality."
