Chapter 4 - Shadows of the EstateThe luxury sedan glided through the iron gates of the Vescari Estate, a sprawling gothic fortress set high on the bluffs overlooking Lake Michigan. High stone walls, heavily armed guards, and black surveillance domes surrounded the perimeter.

Isabella looked out the window, watching the moonlight cut through the thick forest. The high of her triumph at the ballroom was beginning to recede, leaving behind a cold, terrifying reality.
She had just declared war on the most powerful families in the city. And her commander-in-chief was a man whose hands were far from clean.
"You played your part well," Lorenzo said, breaking the silence as the car pulled up to the grand stone entrance. "Better than I expected."
"It wasn't playing," Isabella said quietly, staring at her lap. "I meant every word."
"Good. Passion is useful. But temper it with strategy. Daniel Vance is a coward, but Camille’s father, Arthur Whitfield, is not. He has deep connections in the state Senate. By morning, he will be looking for a way to strike back."
The driver opened the door, and Lorenzo stepped out, offering his hand to Isabella. She took it, feeling the immense, crushing weight of his protection.
They walked into the grand foyer, where vaulted ceilings and dark oak paneling gave the mansion the atmosphere of a medieval castle. An elderly butler in a pristine suit bowed silently as they entered.
"Welcome home, Madam," the butler said softly.
The word hit Isabella like a physical blow. Madam.
"Show Mrs. Cruz to the master suite on the east wing," Lorenzo instructed, unbuttoning his suit jacket. "We have a long day tomorrow."
Isabella stopped in her tracks. "The master suite? Lorenzo, we agreed this was a business arrangement. A contract."
Lorenzo stopped at the base of the grand staircase, turning to look at her. The lighting from the chandelier cast sharp shadows across his angular face, making him look imposing, almost mythical.
"It is a contract, Isabella," Lorenzo said coldly. "And in my world, contracts are absolute. My enemies will be watching this house. They will look for any sign of weakness, any hint that our union is a sham. If they believe you are a pawn, they will kidnap you, leverage you, or kill you to get to me."
He walked back toward her, stopping just inches away. She could feel the heat radiating from him, smell the faint scent of rain and dark tobacco.
"You sleep in my suite because it is the safest room in this fortress," Lorenzo whispered, his voice dangerously soft. "You wear my ring because it is a bulletproof vest. Do not mistake my protection for cruelty, Isabella. But do not mistake it for romance either."
May you like
Isabella squared her shoulders, refusing to back down. "I didn't ask for a romance, Lorenzo. I asked for vengeance."
"Then you are in the right place," he said, turning back toward the stairs. "Get some rest. Tomorrow, we take Daniel Vance's company."
